WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
The Color Purple received eleven Academy Award®-nominations and countless “Best Picture of the Year” awards. Based on Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel, this is a powerful, richly textured, decades spanning story of the indomitable Celie (Goldberg), a young woman forced to marry a brutal man she calls “Mister” (Glover) in the deep American south. Goldberg won the Best Actress Golden Globe Award and an Oscar® nomination—and the acclaim for her impressive portrayal as her best work ever.

DVD To LaserDisc Comparison:
The picture, slightly overmatted at 1.90:1, appears to be the same transfer as the LaserDisc reviewed in Issue 1, and cannot compare to the DVD’s anamorphic widescreen picture, which was reviewed in Issue 25. Though sharpness and color fidelity are sometimes wanting, the picture is sure to please. The soundtrack features a lush, beautifully orchestral score by Quincy Jones. The LaserDisc’s Dolby® Digital soundtrack sounds virtually identical to the DVD’s, distinguished by split surrounds that are occasionally aggressive. The matrix surround on the LaserDisc is the same encoding on the release reviewed in Issue 1. While credited as a 5.1 Dolby Digital mix, the LaserDisc, like the DVD, is actually a 5.0 mix.
