WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Virtuosity is an exciting and thrilling cyberspace ride into the world of virtual reality. Denzel Washington stars as Parker Barnes, an ex-L.A. cop out to stop Sid 6.7, a computer-generated virtual reality creation composed of 200 maniacal personalities, every one a notorious killer. Sid (Sadistic, Intelligent, Dangerous), played by Russell Crowe, was designed to help police officers better understand the criminal mind and put the department to test. But Sid has managed to assume a corporeal form and escape to bounds of cyberspace and is loose in the real world.

LaserDisc Picture:
The theatrical 2.35:1 aspect ratio has been altered to approximately 2.13:1. The picture quality, however, is stunning, with extremely sharp and detailed imagery, and excellent shadow delineation. Colors are vivid, blacks are exceptionally deep and solid, and fleshtones are natural. There is no apparent noise and just an occasioanl minor artifact.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
This is one of the better 5.1-channel mixe and provides a terrifically satisfying and aggressively enveloping surround experience with distinctive localized and directional spatial cues that define each scene’s sonic signature. The matrix Dolby® Surround version is dramatically more vague in spatial character, although there is a comparative aggressive presence to the surround envlopment. Fidelity is excellent and bass extension and power is felt down to below 25Hz, even in the surrounds. The music score is dynamic, and both Foley and sound effects are well recorded. This proves that a good 5.1-channel surround mix is what distinguishes the better soundtrack experiences from matrix surround delivery.
