WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Based on Roald Dahl’s book “Charlie And The Chocolate Factory,” penniless, but good-hearted young Charlie Bucket (Ostrum) enters into a magical world when he wins one of five “Golden Tickets” to visit the mysterious chocolate factory owned by the eccentric Willy Wonka (Wilder) and run by his capable crew of Oompa-Loompas. Once behind the gates, a cast of characters, including Veruca Salt, Agustus Gloop, Violet Beauregarde and Mike Teevee, join Charlie and his feisty Grandpa Joe (Albertson) for a journey to discover that a kind heart is a finer possession than a sweet tooth.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture is matted at 1.82:1. The color hues are dated but otherwise color fidelity is good. Fleshtones are natural and blacks are deep and solid. While shadow detail is good, the picture is wanting in sharpness and detail, exhibiting a soft focus throughout. Slight noise and artifacts including blotches and scratches are apparent.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack theatrically was monaural, but this release showcases a Chace-created stereo soundtrack, both on the matrix PCM and 5.1 discrete Dolby® Digital versions. The soundtrack’s fidelity is dated and often distorted with the matirx version sounding less harsh. The dialogue, ADR-produced, is wanting in naturalness and spatial integration. The sound switches back and forth from mono to stereo, and except for the slightly wider music soundstage, the differences are subtle.
