WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Satirist Lina Wertmüller’s Swept Away... By An Unusual Destiny In The Blue Sea Of August is a fascinating parable of politics, power and sex. When Gennarino (Giannini), an insolent servant and Raffaella (Melato), his detestable arrogant employer become stranded on a desolate island after their yacht’s dinghy engine fails, their roles suddenly reverse when he realizes he has the upper hand. On the island, their quarreling escalates and, while they fight, they inevitably fall in love with each other. The film’s breathtaking cinematography will leave you feeling swept away and perhaps wishing you were there.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture exhibits good color fidelity with natural fleshtones and deep solid blacks. While generally sharp and detailed, shadow detail is wanting and some scenes seem overly soft and out-of-focus. Distracting artifacts and scratches, inherent in the original materials, mar the entire film, but it is virtually noise free. The aspect ratio is 1.88:1.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The sound is undistinguished monaural with problematic bass that thumps in level throughout.
