DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 1.85:1 DVD picture (for both editions) exhibits satisfying HD-originated images that serve the storytelling quite nicely. Colors are richly saturated, with vibrant hues (especially in the game sequences for "Spy Kids 3"), well balanced fleshtones, and deep blacks. Clarity can be a bit wanting, however, with some scenes appearing unnaturally pasty. Images can seem a bit soft at times, but details are nicely rendered. Edge enhancement can also be a problem. Some details are noticed shimmering at times, but there is minimal breakup from pixelization. The three-dimensional effects in "Spy Kids 3-D" appear to be quite effective (four sets of glasses are included with the DVD), with some exciting stomach-dropping sequences. Whichever version of the movie you choose to watch with your family, the experience is quite satisfying. (Suzanne Hodges)
