Thrilled to be shedding their former junior-high geek status, best friends Wade (Hartley) and Ryan (Gentile) are looking forward to donning a new persona in high school. When the friends arrive on their first day of school to find Filkins (Frost), the school bully, stuffing a diminutive fellow freshman in a locker, Wade speaks up against the bully, sealing his fate as the target of hazing and harassment. Wade and Ryan are sure the only way out of the daily torture of being picked on by Filkins and his buddy Ronnie (Peck) is to hire a bodyguard for protection. Limited funds lead the boys to find a cut-rate solution to their problems in local homeless Vet, Drillbit Taylor (Wilson). With the assistance of the hired help, the nerdy group of friends take on the school's bullies. (Stacey Pendry)

The anamorphically enhanced 2.40:1 DVD shows deep black levels, for the most part, but there are scenes where the blacks appear overly gray. Shadows are delineated well, though, and there is a pleasant sense of depth to the image. Colors are somewhat drab and desaturated, and contrast is too hot with whites that often bloom. Fleshtones have a pinkish hue, and highlights in skin often look too bright. There are occasional compression artifacts noticeable, and resolution is adequate. Edge enhancement is recognizable but not distracting. The VC-1-encoded Blu-ray Disc™ is softer than most high-definition releases, but black levels are solid and shadow delineation is adequate. Fleshtones still appear too pink, but contrast appears more natural. (Danny Richelieu)

The DVD's Dolby® Digital 5.1-channel soundtrack delivers fair fidelity, but dialogue occasionally sounds forward with poor spatial integration. The dialogue can also be overly bright. In addition, clipping distortion is also audible. Dynamic range is good, with subtle effects delivered well. The front stage can sound acceptably deep, but often it sounds flat and lifeless. The LFE channel is incorporated fairly well with music, but rarely with effects. The Blu-ray Disc's lossless Dolby TrueHD encoding improves fidelity, but dialogue still sounds forward and strident at times. Bass definition is fairly poor, but dynamic range is adequate.
