High Definition DVD

13-Sep-05

The first distribution company specializing in High Def DVD announces its product launch. High Def Home Entertainment plans to release a variety of content, including feature films, concerts and music videos, extreme sports and documentaries, as well as adult material - all on High Def DVD. Most titles will contain both High Def and standard NTSC versions, meaning they still will function in any regular DVD player. Working with Japanese company, I-O Data, they are also helping to bring the first High Def DVD players - the AVeL Linkplayer - to the U.S. market (available now). These players will allow for full High Def resolution playback - but can still also play standard DVD's, as well as connect via the network to the computer for playback of other files, including video, photos and music. In addition to full High Def playback on these players, HDHE's titles can also be played in full resolution on tens of millions of computers - using Windows Media Player on (approximately) a 2.4GHz or better PC. This format will provide optimal viewing experience for consumers who have invested in HDTVs. Although new technologies of optical disc - namely Blu-ray and HD DVD - are due on the market early next year, the High Def DVD format presents several advantages over those: ? Versatility - multiple versions plus computer playback. ? Price - since red-laser DVDs are used, the cost of replication is no more than for any standard DVD; and the retail price of High Def DVD players is an affordable $249, substantially less than estimates for either of the other technologies' players. HDHE's first High Def DVD's will hit the shelves Sept. 8, starting with adult titles. The adult industry has often played a significant role in the proliferation of new entertainment technology, including VHS, DVD and particularly the Internet. Among the releases is the most famous adult film of all time, ""Deep Throat,"" from Arrow Productions. It is currently being transferred and digitally restored from the newly rediscovered film negative. ""Deep Throat HD"" will be released in September. Mainstream titles will follow soon, with up to 100 titles planned for release within six months. HDHE also is working to bring High Definition to the Internet. Working with Adult DVD Empire, they will soon offer downloadable clips in full High Def resolution. They are also working on a more comprehensive solution for playback of video through the AVeL Linkplayer to an (HD)TV. This first-generation set-top box functionality represents a significant goal in the future of Home Entertainment that is on par with the High Def DVD itself.
