Sizzling Q4 HD Plasma Prices Send Sales Soaring in 2005

February 13, 2006

High definition Plasma TV sales rose to an all time high in 2005 displacing ED Plasma TVs for the first time on a year-to-year basis. Quixel Research’s Plasma TV Market Review for Q4 2005 revealed that 64 percent of the total PDP market in units and 76 percent of the PDP market in value consisted of high definition products. “The market was brimming with much more reasonably priced 42” HD Plasma TVs in both the third and fourth quarters of 2005,” states Oliver Murphy, a Quixel Senior Market Analyst. “Of course Plasma TVs are still much more expensive than CRTs, but we saw a price decline of almost 35 percent from 2004 to 2005. A product that was completely out of reach for most people became affordable for many.” Even with the strong price decline, the USA Plasma TV category grew 58 percent from 2004 to 2005 or increased from $3.3B in 2004 to $5.3B in 2005. In the fourth quarter of 2005, revenues marked a quarterly high of over $1.8B compared to Q3 sales of $1.4B. On a year-to-year basis the PDP unit volume also increased dramatically. When comparing 2004 to 2005, unit sales for the PDP category grew 127 percent and when comparing fourth quarter year-to-year, the category grew 68 percent. The total value of the Advanced TV market in the USA was worth over $15B in revenues in 2005 and the Plasma TV segment represented over 34 percent of that market. Quixel Research’s projections for the USA Plasma TV market show the category reaching over $9B in sales by 2009.
