March 6, 2006

Director James Cameron (ALIENS OF THE DEEP, TITANIC), a pioneer in using new technologies including digital 3D, will deliver the Sunday keynote at NAB2006's Digital Cinema Summit. Cameron, who consistently takes filmmaking into new territories, will address near and far horizons for digital 3D. In addition, National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO) president John Fithian will join Cameron in a Sunday afternoon dialogue that will bring together two industry leaders with overlapping goals and concerns. The pair will explore the future of the theatre going experience, digital cinema and digital 3D. Cameron's keynote will take place at 9:00 AM and the Cameron/Fithian dialogue at 1:30 PM on Sunday, April 23, 2006, at the Las Vegas Convention Center South Hall. "Digital cinema and 3D open the door for filmmakers to mine completely new creative territory," said Cameron. "It's up to exhibitors, now, to adopt these new technologies on the display side, so that audiences have a reason to seek out the cinema and leave their computer and flat screen TVs." Fithian explained, "After years of hard work on technical specifications, equipment development and business modeling, the cinema industry stands at the dawn of the biggest technological revolution since the advent of sound. Digital cinema starts right now, in the year 2006, and it couldn't come at a more important time." "We're thrilled to host this meeting of two influential leaders," said Charles S. Swartz, executive director/CEO, Entertainment Technology Center at USC (ETC-USC), co-producer of the Digital Cinema Summit. "While John and Jim represent different industry sectors, they share a passion for quality storytelling and a commitment to the cinema experience." SMPTE President Edward Hobson concurred, "John was a speaker at our Digital Cinema Summit two years ago, and we're looking forward to hearing from him again, this time dovetailed with what Jim will be saying." Fithian's keynote will take place Saturday, April 22, 2006 at 8:30 AM. The Digital Cinema Summit at NAB2006 features case studies, expert tutorials, keynotes and panels that examine practical issues arising from the production, postproduction, distribution and exhibition of digital cinema. Saturday's program, produced by SMPTE, centers around digital cinema mastering, distribution and exhibition issues and Sunday's schedule, produced by ETC-USC, looks at production and postproduction of digital cinema content.
