Largest Building Blitz In Habitat History Kicks Off This Week - Home Builders Blitz 2006

June 5, 2006

Monday marks the start of the largest home building blitz in history as Habitat affiliates across the United States join forces in the Habitat for Humanity(R) Home Builders Blitz 2006. Habitat for Humanity(R) International (HFHI), local affiliates and the building industry have partnered to build more than 400 homes in 130 communities throughout the nation in only one week. "Never before have so many Habitat homes been built so quickly," said Kevin Campbell, national director of Habitat for Humanity's Home Builders Blitz. "Next week, several hundred families in need of safe, decent and affordable housing will have their dreams come true. Through Home Builders Blitz 2006, home ownership will be realized more quickly than ever." The idea for the project dates back to 2002, when custom homebuilder Tom Gipson and Habitat for Humanity of Wake County, N.C., partnered to recruit 12 homebuilders to each build one home in a five-day period. Over the past three years, 36 Habitat homes have been built in the Raleigh, N.C., area as part of a building blitz. Builders from the Raleigh blitz conceived the nationwide event to help more families and presented the idea for the Home Builders Blitz to Habitat for Humanity International. In addition to support from homebuilders, corporate sponsors have donated time, materials and financial support to the cause. Sponsors include Whirlpool Corporation, Dow, Yale, Square D, Valspar Corporation, Hunter Douglas, Ferguson, Kohler, Larson Manufacturing Company, Rinnai Corporation and MASCO Corporation, as well as building partner, Centex Homes.
