Cuts Inc. Pioneers The First Legal Method For Editing And Sharing Copyright Video

October 4, 2006

Do you love Star Wars but hate Jar-Jar Binks? Does your young child get scared when the shark kills Nemo’s mother? Would you like to watch movies with your kids without the nudity and bad language? Were you a fan of Pop-Up Videos? Would you like to become your own film director? If so, then Cuts Inc. has a product for you. The company is showcasing its video editing and sharing service today at DEMOfall 06, the premiere conference for showing off innovative new products. As Cuts CEO Evan Krauss said, “Cuts is a service that enables everyday people to edit, share and watch personalized versions of copyrighted video -- legally.” The Cuts editing service is a fun and simple way to get creative with video. Its point-and-click editing program for PCs and MACs enables users to skip and pause scenes, mute foul language, rearrange scenes, mash-up two movies, insert video clips, and add commentaries from experts, comedians and friends. With the Cuts Player and Cuts’ online Directory service, users can post their own edits, as well as navigate through a variety of categories and lists of popular Cuts made by others. The Cuts Groups feature lets people with common interests share what’s relevant to them, rating and recommending videos within their Group. Cuts works with DVD’s, personal videos, On Demand content protected with Microsoft’s Digital Rights Management (DRM) system and, of course, iTunes. The secret to Cuts is that the edits people make never alter the original video. Instead, Cuts generates a set of instructions, called Cutlists, which implement the edits on the fly any time the video is played back with the Cuts Player software. Viewers must have the original video in order to view the edited version. More than 55 million people are now viewing and interacting with video online, even altering them to suit their tastes. Eleven million people are downloading TV shows and seven million are downloading full length movies. Chris Shipley, executive producer of DEMOfall, says, “All over the world people are taking control of their viewing experiences, in many cases illegally. But everyone should be able personalize their digital videos without fear of violating the law. Cuts is launching a clever and easy solution to this problem.” The Cuts editing system will be offered free to users. About Cuts, Inc. Cuts Inc., headquartered in San Francisco, CA, was incorporated in September, 2005 with a mandate to make it easy for people to edit any video and to easily share their changes online. The company's Cutlist technology allows users to share edits vs altered content. This means users can take any video -- and add clips, comments, skip scenes they don’t want to watch and even mash-up two movies legally. Evan Krauss joined the team as President and CEO in June, 2006. Krauss, a veteran in the Internet industry, has worked to build new products and businesses at Yahoo!, AOL, Excite, Looksmart and Agency.com. Cuts’ seed funding was led by First Round Capital, and included funding from Ben Franklin Technology Partners, angels, the Founders and the Executive Team.
