Pacific Media Associates, the global market information experts on large-screen displays, reports that unit sales for rear projection HDTVs in North America reversed the slumping sales figures from earlier in the summer, and jumped 30% for units and revenues in August. Their RPTV Sell-Through Tracking Service also shows that while inventories rose by 13% in August, the Days Supply Index fell as a result of the robust sales. “The overall average street price rose by 0.5% in August,” according to Rosemary Abowd, Vice President with Pacific Media Associates. “New models from Sony and Samsung appeared on the market, and buyers chose to buy newer models with higher price tags, rather than close-out models with reduced prices.” 1080p models continued to dominate, gaining 7 share points to earn a 61% unit market share, even though the overall average street price for 1080p models was about $1,000 higher than for 720p sets. Samsung retained the #1 position for unit and revenue market share. Sony’s new 60” SXRD model KDS-60A2000 was the best selling unit in August.
