Convergence Of Consumer Electronics And PCs Driving Demand For Both Markets, AMD Exec To Tell Samsung Conference

A convergence of functionality between consumer electronics and personal computing will drive greater demand for both PCs and consumer electronics (CE), a key AMD (NYSE:AMD) executive will tell a Samsung executive conference this week in San Jose. Joe Menard, corporate vice president of AMD’s Consumer Business Segment, is one of a series of high-level speakers addressing the first Samsung industry Conference this Wednesday. The November 15 conference exploring the future of CE and computing ecosystems will be held at the San Jose Fairmont and will begin at 8:30 a.m. In a presentation entitled, “Where PCs Meet Consumer Electronics” Menard will point to full-featured PCs providing advanced multimedia functionality, powered by AMD microprocessors and incorporating Samsung Semiconductor DRAM, to illustrate accelerating convergence between the computer and CE sectors. Easy-to-use home media servers will be another concept Menard will discuss, one that would allow users to quickly access stored multi-media content from a variety of CE devices in the home. A combined set-top box and PC is yet another potential concept to be discussed. Menard also will assess opportunities for IC designers and manufacturers being created by the convergence of traditional PC functionality and CE applications. He will call for further steps to make these devices even more user-friendly, advocate higher levels of quality and promote increased bandwidth.
