Monitor Audio Launches New Series 200 In-Ceiling Theater Speakers

C265LCR and C280LCR Models Feature the Revolutionary Inverted Dual Concentric (IDC™) Driver Module for Pin-Point Sound Localization in Home Theater and Music Applications

December 22, 2006

At the heart of the two new in-ceiling LCR models is a unique Inverted Dual Concentric pivoting mid-range/tweeter module providing up to 18 degrees of play. Speakers can be discreetly positioned, and then the sound can be directed into the desired listening zone by pivoting the IDC™ driver module to maximize performance. These new models are true 3-way designs and offer superior performance and flexibility over typical 2-way or fixed angle speaker designs. The IDC™ driver module houses a 4” C-CAM® mid-range and 1” C-CAM® gold dome tweeter. We selected a 4” mid-range driver to enable a low crossover point from the mid-range to the bass driver. Directional information is radiated from the IDC™ driver module, which covers a wide frequency range from 250Hz to 30KHz. This is of paramount importance for vocal band intelligibility and accurate sound localization for realistic movie and music playback. A special inverted 4” RST® profile cone provides superior dispersion, while enabling the cone to be set as far forward as possible, allowing clear acoustic ‘sighting’ of the desired listening zone and negating undesirable diffraction effects. The 4” mid-range driver utilizes an over-sized 38mm edge-wound voice coil to provide high overall power handling and output capacity. Separate tweeter and mid-range Neodymium magnet systems provide high overall power handling and efficiency. The IDC™ driver module operates in its own completely sealed chamber to provide accurate damping and perfect acoustic alignment. Adjustable Response Controls Optimum set-up for the C265LCR and C280LCR speakers is established through a high frequency (+3db or -3db) level adjustment and boundary compensation (on or off) controls to optimize response for a wide range of installation locations. The bass drivers are designed to work in a ceiling or wall cavity, with minimal damping. This provides a natural roll off characteristic that will ensure optimum performance and bass extension. However, it may be necessary in certain installations to locate the speaker close to a corner apex of the ceiling and wall. In this situation the bass region will become accentuated, possibly resulting in an un-balanced sonic characteristic. The effect is similar to placing a conventional hi-fi speaker in the corner of a room. The boundary compensation provides a gentle roll off character while preserving the extreme low frequency output. C-CAM® Our renowned C-CAM® (Ceramic Coated Aluminum Magnesium) alloy is an innovative material that exhibits ideal mechanical properties for use in high performance loudspeaker cones and diaphragms. C-CAM® is extremely rigid and light resulting in accurate sound reproduction and high overall efficiency. Monitor Audio’s legendary 1” C-CAM® gold dome tweeter is used to provide crystal clarity, detail, and remain supremely smooth overall. Recent improvement to the surround and motor system has enabled us to extend the frequency response beyond 30 kHz, ready to exploit digital cinema and audio formats. The C-CAM® material is utilized for all C265LCR and C280LCR tweeters, and mid-range and bass drivers. RST® The RST® (Rigid Surface Technology) cone profile eliminates bending, increases stiffness, and lowers mass to deliver crisp transient response, wide dynamic range, and low distortion. The RST® cone profile is utilized in the inverted 4” mid-range driver found in both LCR in-ceiling models. 25% Less Time to Install and Twice the Clamping Surface Area The C265LCR and C280LCR feature patented Tri-Grip® fixing clamps. Our ‘three-dogleg’ Tri-Grip® fixing clamps take 25% less time to install than conventional ‘four-dogleg’ clamping speakers. The Tri-Grip® mounting clamps have three clamping points per dogleg providing twice the clamping surface area than conventional four-dogleg, single-point clamping speakers. Our wider three-point clamps provide a better seal between the speaker and ceiling maximizing bass response and midrange clarity. Smoothest Clamping Mechanism We designed our new in-ceiling models with smooth cams on our clamp-tower and clamp-leg allowing the clamp to move into position smoothly when the installer begins to tighten the mounting screws. With the first turn of the clamp screw, the clamp-leg begins to move out and down simultaneously, and does not depend on a friction-snap action that snaps the clamp-leg out before it moves down the clamp-tower. Protective Crossover Covers for Easy Handling During Installation The new in-ceiling models feature protective dust covers that are designed to prevent the ingress of loose building materials or dust into the driver and crossover. The protective covers also make handling easy during Installation, and protect the crossover components from damage during installation. Ready for Action in Humid Environments The new C265LCR and C280LCR models will resist high humidity and are built to exceed fire-rating standards. They feature aluminum grilles, polypropylene housings with UV inhibitors, and C-CAM® drivers with rubber surrounds. The new in-ceiling models are paint-able. A paint mask and additional scrim cloth is provided. New construction brackets are available to help mark speaker placement during framing. The brackets will span up to 24” studs. New construction brackets are not required for retrofitting into existing walls or ceilings. C265LCR A compact 3-way speaker featuring a pivoting IDC® 4” mid-range/1” tweeter module, and a 6.5” C-CAM® bass driver C280LCR A larger 3-way speaker than the C265LCR featuring a pivoting IDC® 4” mid-range/1” tweeter module, and an 8” C-CAM® bass driver providing higher power handling and output, and deeper bass response C265LCR and C280LCR in-ceiling speakers will be available in May 2007. MSRP: C265LCR: $300.00 Each C280LCR: $400.00 Each About Monitor Audio Monitor Audio designs and manufactures British loudspeakers and music systems of the highest quality.
