ColorLink, a leading supplier of polarization and color management optics for the consumer electronics industry, announced the release of ALPS(TM), a solid state switchable polarizer for stereoscopic 3D projection systems. The product will be launched at the 2007 Stereoscopic Displays and Applications Conference which will take place at the San Jose Convention center. The conference is to be held on the 28th through the 31st and uses ALPS to showcase the conference's 3D content. ColorLink's CTO, Gary Sharp, will present a technical paper on ALPS on Tuesday, Jan. 30 at 4:20 p.m. The demonstration shows ALPS (Achromatic Linear Polarization Switch) attached externally to a projector's lens. The demonstration highlights ALPS throughput, contrast and field of view performance and draws special attention to its ability to match its output to the polarized eyewear used at the venue. This functionality is valuable to system integrators who in many cases have to adapt to existing eyewear currently in use at a particular venue or business. ColorLink's Technical Marketing Manager, John Korah, summarized, "ALPS reduces to one the two projectors previously required to present the left eye and right eye perspectives necessary for stereoscopic 3D. Furthermore, ALPS allows users to select between linear or circular polarization to match the application or the eyewear. This versatility will provide a significant cost benefit as ALPS finds application ranging from theme park style 3D entertainment to high-end 3D visualization for the industrial and scientific community." With the ability to output either linear or circular polarized light and devoid of the alignment issues relating to two projector based 3D systems, ALPS is set to expand the penetration of stereoscopic 3D projection systems.
