Pacific Media Reports Flat Panel HDTV Prices Continue To Drop

The average street price for consumer models fell another 3% in January

Pacific Media Associates, the global market information experts on large-screen displays, reports that average street price for 30” or larger flat panel televisions in North America dropped another 3% in January. Their monthly Consumer Flat Panel Display Sell-Through Tracking Service also shows that consumers were drawn more to smaller models ranging from 30” to 39” in diagonal screen size. “The best selling portion was the 32” WXGA LCD HDTV segment,” according to Rosemary Abowd, Vice President with Pacific Media. “These accounted for 23% of the units sold in our sample in January, as the average price dropped 8%, nearing $900 average street price.” “The overall price decline is largely a result of consumers shifting to the smaller models,” Abowd continued. “We did see average street price drops in some segments, such as the 37” WXGA LCD TVs that fell 33% in January. This drop was caused in part by a lot of inventory sold through online retailers at very aggressive discounts.” Overall, LCD models topped plasma by nearly a two-to-one margin, which is the largest lead in the history of the Tracking Service. LCD models accounted for 14 of the top 20 best selling models, compared to just six of 20 in January 2006. Sony maintained its hold in top position for consumer flat panel displays over 30” unit sales and revenues, with Samsung in second place. The best selling model for January was the 50” Panasonic TH-50PX600U, which had an average street price that was 7.5% lower than in December.
