Vitex Systems Signs Licensing Agreement With MicroEmissive Display For Its Barix Thin-film Encapsulation Technology

New Licensing Model Continues to Gain Traction

June 13, 2007

Vitex Systems, Inc., a leading technology developer, licensor and engineering service provider for thin-film encapsulation and moisture barrier films, today announced that it has signed a license and material supply agreement with MicroEmissive Displays Group plc (AIM: MED) of the United Kingdom. MED is the world leader in designing and manufacturing low-power, light-emitting polymer displays. The license gives MED the non-exclusive rights to use Vitex's proprietary Barix(TM) thin-film encapsulation technology on MED's next-generation microdisplays. Today's announcement is the latest example of Vitex's success in executing its new licensing business model, which it established in early 2006. Commenting on this agreement with MED, Chyi-Shan Suen, director of sales and marketing for Vitex, said, "This is another significant milestone for Vitex. MED will be one of the first companies to apply Vitex's proprietary Barix thin-film encapsulation technology in mass production. Top emission microdisplays on silicon are extremely difficult to encapsulate since the encapsulation must be highly uniform and transparent with extremely narrow- edge sealing spaces -- all at very high yields. MED's use of our Barix technology demonstrates that Vitex's thin-film solution can satisfy the most demanding encapsulation applications." John McEachran, director of operations of MED, said, "This agreement represents a major step forward for MED, as the introduction of Barix into our manufacturing process will result in significant improvements to the quality and reliability of our next-generation displays." MED's full-color P-OLED microdisplay products combine high-quality still and moving images with extremely-low-power consumption and ease-of-electronic integration -- making them particularly suitable for portable and personal battery-powered consumer products such as digital still cameras, video cameras and wearable displays. The eyescreen(TM) provides a complete digital microdisplay solution with a high level of electronic and optical integration, and offers a superior image quality coupled with ultra-low-power consumption. The emissive polymer organic light emitting diode (P-OLED) technology, which requires no backlight components, together with the integrated display driver electronics and digital video interface, allows straightforward glue-less integration into a wide range of systems and enables product designers to develop smaller and lighter weight products. The eyescreen is ideal for: electronic viewfinders (EVF) for digital cameras, video cameras and night scopes; head-mounted displays (HMD) for personal media players; portable gaming consoles; and digital video/TV broadcasting on mobile phones. Vitex's proprietary Barix thin-film encapsulation is an ultra-high barrier suitable for encapsulating OLED displays and devices that are sensitive to moisture and oxygen, such as organic and inorganic photovoltaics, organic solid state lighting and thin-film batteries. The Barix thin-film barrier is coated directly onto the device surface. As a result, electronic devices utilizing the Barix encapsulation can eliminate costly and bulky mechanical encapsulation, enabling them to be made up to 50 percent thinner and lighter. When Barix is combined with Flexible Glass, weight and thickness can be reduced up to 90 percent.
