Samsung SDI Unveils The High Efficiency Full-HD Plasma

World’s First adoption of innovative Single Scan Technology to Full-HD Plasma, which enables it to reduce the manufacturing cost as much as 30%

August 30, 2007

Samsung SDI Co., Ltd., the world ‘s second largest provider of Plasma display panels(PDP), announces on Iternational Meeting on Information Displays(IMID) 2007 that it has developed the world’s first Full High-Definition PDP using Single scan technology. Full-HD PDP with single scan technology, which requires only one Driver IC for an image instead of two Driver ICs now used, makes Samsung SDI not only be ready to improve the high efficiency but also be satisfied with the best-cost reduction and its competitiveness in manufacturing. New PDP using a technology called ‘Innovative Single scan’ enables it to reduce the manufacturing cost as much as 30% just maintaining the image quality. Furthermore, Samsung SDI has achieved optimum cost saving and environmental friendliness by reducing the PDP glass thickness from about 3mm to 1.8mm. The slimmest glass is applied to 50-inch Full-HD PDP, so panel weights 6.6kg less. These improvements are helping to intensify its lineup of over 50-inch sized large PDP and put high efficiency PDP into the market mainstream. “More demand is coming for PDP. This development will make PDPs expected to aggressively bolster their presences in the 50-inch and larger TV sets market” said ByoungYoul Yu, Executive vice president, Samsung SDI PDP development Team. Mass production of the new 50-inch PDP using single scan technology is scheduled to begin in the next month. In addition, the company also unveils the world’s thinnest 4-inch full-color Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diodes (AMOLED) display, which is only 0.37mm thick. This prototype is being expected to be applied to various applications, such as a hand-held device. Samsung SDI products and technology can be seen at IMID 2007, Korea.
