Definitive Technology Introduces New Reference Series Built-in Home Theater Loudspeakers

September 5, 2007

Today Definitive Technology announced two new model additions to the critically-acclaimed Reference line of built-in home theater high performance loudspeakers. The Reference Ceiling Speaker III (RCS III) is a smaller version of the RCS II introduced at CES 2007. The Reference Surround Speaker III is a more compact version of the RSS II built-in bi-polar dedicated surround speaker released earlier in 2007. Like other models in the Reference Series, both new models use integrated non-resonant medite (a high density wood product) sealed enclosures to deliver the tight, detailed bass and uncolored midrange of audiophile-grade free-standing speakers. Six rotating dogleg clamps make the RSC and RSS speakers easy to install and provide secure, non-resonant mounting. Four angled screw holes in the baffle allow the installer to drive wood screws into nearby joists or studs to further strengthen the installation and prevent unwanted vibrations and room buzzes. The RCS III are in-ceiling front main, center, or surround speakers in a built-in home theater installation and can also be used as main speakers in a stereo system. It features two 4-1/2" cast basket active drivers and a 1" Pure Aluminum tweeter on an angled baffle aimed at the listening area. Special Wave Launch baffle geometry and acoustic treatment materials serve to create the illusion that the speakers are directly in front of the listener rather than up in the ceiling. The Perfect Vision magazine praised the RCS II as “…jaw-droppingly good home theater speakers that just happen to live in the ceiling…destined to shift every paradigm there is regarding ceiling speakers.” The active drivers are pressure coupled to two racetrack shaped 5-1/4" x 4-1/8" planar Low Bass Radiators for exceptional bass response. The RSS III is a dedicated bi-polar surround speaker that may be ceiling or wall mounted in new or existing construction. Its bi-polar array produces the ideal balance of direct sound for pinpoint localization and ambient sound for enveloping spaciousness. Each of the two arrays feature a 3-3/4" cast basket mid/bass driver pressure coupled to a 3-3/4" Low Bass Radiator with a 1" Pure Aluminum dome tweeter in between the driver and radiator. All models in the Reference Series share the same driver and tweeter technologies and can be mixed and matched to assemble a multi-channel system with seamless channel-to-channel imaging. Definitive also offers two in-wall subwoofers with companion amplifier for a complete audiophile-grade stealth home theater system. The RCS III and RSS III will be available in February 2008 at MSRPs of $999 and $799 per pair respectively.
