D-Box Signs Deal With Disney To Feature Its Motion Technology On Blu-ray Discs

December 3, 2007

D-Box Technologies Inc. said it has scored a deal with Walt Disney that will put its technology on select Blu-ray movies released by the Hollywood studio. D-Box said the deal allows Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment to use its D-Box Motion Code technology on an unspecified number of titles. The D-box motion device can be installed on living room couches and sofas allowing suspension systems to lift and pivot viewers' chairs to simulate action sequences on the television screen. The device works with video discs that are embedded with coding from the company. Shares in D-Box closed up 6.5 cents or nearly 15 per cent to 51 cents on the TSX Venture Exchange Monday. Blu-ray is a high-definition format that enhances picture quality above the quality of DVD, and has become one of the two competing formats favoured by home theatre enthusiasts. The discs can be played in Blu-ray players or on PlayStation 3 gaming consoles. The first Disney title to feature the technology will be "The Game Plan," starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, which tells the story of a famed football player who discovers he has an eight-year-old daughter. The Blu-ray disc releases on January 22, 2008. "We are very proud of having Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment on board as it will undoubtedly accelerate the penetration of our technology worldwide and will significantly enhance our efforts to become a world standard in the entertainment industry," said D-Box president and CEO Claude Mc Master in a release. D-Box already has separate deals with video game companies and movie studios Lionsgate and 20th Century Fox. The product is already available on several DVD releases, including "Live Free or Die Hard" and "Saw III: Director's Cut."
