Realscan 3D Inc. (www.realscan3d.com) of Redondo Beach, California recently completed extensive 3D scanning work for Disney’s talking dog comedy, BEVERLY HILLS CHIHUAHUA. The film, set for release on October 3, 2008, is directed by Raja Gosnell (SCOOBY DOO) and written by Analisa LaBianco and Jeff Bushnell. The story centers on a spoiled and pampered Beverly Hills bred Chihuahua named Chloe (voiced by Drew Barrymore). On vacation with her owner in Mexico, Chloe accidentally gets lost and then stranded with no way to get back home. It’s up to her Los Angeles street-smart Chihuahua pal Papi (voiced by George Lopez) to head south of the border to rescue his lady love. Shot with an innovative mix of live-action canines merged with state-of-the-art 3D modeling, BEVERLY HILLS CHIHUAHUA takes the beloved genre of “talking dog” movies to astonishing new heights. Realscan 3D joined together with visual effects powerhouses Tippett Studios and Cinesite to scan the film’s vast menagerie of canine characters. Coming off their highly successful work with collaborators Hoyt Yeatman, Framestore CFC, and Cinesite on Disney’s UNDERDOG, Realscan 3D got the call from the studio again to apply their proprietary RealCapture NexGen 3D scanning technology to BEVERLY HILLS CHIHUAHUA. Realscan captured the entire cast of canines for the movie, working both in pre-production in Los Angeles and on set in Puerto Vallarta. Realscan delivered the highly accurate body and head scans to both Tippett Studios and Cinesite. The two FX powerhouses then added rigging, fur, and animation. The accurate models were used in the film in a variety of ways ranging from head replacements to full-body digital doggies. In one scene Tippett created as many as 240 digital Chihuahuas using the accurate models supplied by Realscan. Another shot with a German Shepherd and a Doberman squaring off went completely CG when shot design changed after principle photography. The studio saved significant time and money for the digital doggies appearing in the film by combining the talents of this winning team.
