Bell’O International, a leading designer of A/V furniture and accessories, is helping home theater and entertainment lovers get the most out of their home set up with a series of helpful tips from the pros on its Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/pages/BellO-International/130028875506?ref=ts). This month, Bell’O invited celebrated interior designer Gregory Allan Cramer, who works with a wide variety of clientele at all budget levels, to offer tips on creating the perfect media room.
As Cramer notes, the media room can be one of the most difficult spaces in the home to decorate. “The media room is the space in the home that everyone uses on a daily basis to watch TV, movies, play games, do home work, computer work and just hang out. It has to be functional and comfortable. That is not so easy to achieve because everyone in the family has different requirements. “
To help make the job easier, Cramer created a series of tips exclusively for Bell’O’s Facebook page:
• Decide how many people are actually going to be using the space. You want to make room for everyone.
• Create a budget and don’t be afraid to stick to what you can afford. With a little creativity, a wonderful room can be done on a modest budget. Shop the electronics first. You will be able to establish a budget if you know how much you have to spend for the components that best suit your needs. Warning! Measure your space before you shop. You have to know what you have room for and what components will perform best in the designated space.
• Consider the light source. Lighting has a major impact on viewing capacity. Does your room have natural light? If there is too much outside light, then you may want to consider a solar shade system, which come in many prices and styles, which can darken a room for entertainment viewing. If you don’t have natural light, then there are so many new, inexpensive lighting options that will make room look high tech and highly styled. Either case, don’t forget about direct lighting for reading.
• For some reason, seating is always the last consideration. Remember, this is your personal style. Comfort is of ultra importance and that can be achieved at any price. Make sure there is enough room for every member of the family as well as a guest or two. Space dictates. A large oversized sofa or sectional might be suitable or even rows of home theatre seating.
• Different color schemes can change the feel and mood of a room dramatically. Are you a person who is more comfortable in a cool toned (blue, green or purples) or warm toned (red, orange and yellows) room? Color affects people in very different ways. It literally can be a great mood altering experience. Personal color choices are one of the keys to a successful interior design project.
• Component storage should not be an after thought. Are you the type of person who likes to see the audio/visual equipment and have CDs, books and wires exposed? Or are you the type who wants everything hidden? Hiding the television in an armoire used to be all the rage. Now the options are limitless. Flat screen TV’s can be hidden and then with a touch of a button slide out of a gorgeous piece of furniture. Or the flat screen TV can hang on the wall or sit on an audio/video furniture piece and be the central focus of the room. It is all a matter of personal taste.
