Next Generation Wi-Fi Technology

June 18, 2010

The next generation Wi-Fi is just around the corner and appropriately named Wi-Gig for transferring gigabytes of data wirelessly. The wireless gigabit alliance and the Wi-Fi alliance are lobbying the wireless networking manufacturers like Linksys and D-Link to incorporate the latest format into their products. The alliance does not see Wi-Gig as a replacement to Wi-Fi but more as a complement as WiGig's covering range is significantly smaller. The main benefit of Wi-gig is the ability to stream across room or between separate rooms from stored media libraries but one access point will not be enough to cover the entire home. Wi-Gig will be able to transmit data at speed of upto 7 Gbps/sec (gigabytes/sec) making it suitable for high-definition content and positioning it to replace wired HDMI connections in the future. The Wi-Gig standard will run on the 60 GHz spectrum and will be compatible with existing devices that support Wi-Fi. It will not be less than 2 years before a product with Wi-Gig format hits the market according to Kelly Davis-Felner of Wi-Gig. Wi-Gig's board of directors consist of Dell, Cisco Systems and Apple which should mean it will be mass adopted by the consumers.
