THX 3D Display Certification Named As CES Innovations 2011 Design And Engineering Awards Honoree

November 11, 2010

THX Limited today announced that it has been named an International CES Innovations 2011 Design and Engineering Awards Honoree for its THX 3D Display Certification. Products entered in this prestigious program are judged by a preeminent panel of independent industrial designers, engineers and members of the media to honor outstanding design and engineering in cutting edge consumer electronics products across 35 product categories. 3DTVs, 3D movies and 3D broadcast programs are all designed to work together to deliver a great 3D experience to the home. In order to provide a high quality 3D experience, it is critical that TV manufacturers design and build 3D products that can present 3D content with the highest possible quality. During the THX 3D certification process, more than 400 laboratory tests are conducted, evaluating left and right eye images for color accuracy, cross-talk, viewing angles and video processing performance. This testing is critical because a THX Certified 3DTV has to perform many of the same technical requirements that are found in the professional studio. In addition, both Left and Right eye images must be presented accurately, with minimal artifacts, to ensure a pristine 3D effect for the viewer. "THX has introduced the world's first and only 3D performance benchmark," said Rick Dean, senior vice president at THX. "The complexity of 3D technology poses a real challenge for display manufacturers to achieve consistent picture quality. THX 3D Certified Displays must be capable of delivering accurate color and clean signal processing when presenting 3D content, as well as provide consumers a simple one-button solution for getting great 2D and 3D experiences right out-of the-box." The prestigious Innovations Design and Engineering Awards have been recognizing achievements in product design and engineering since 1976. It is sponsored by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)®, the producer of the International CES, the world's largest consumer technology tradeshow. The Innovations entries are judged based on the following criteria: * Engineering qualities, based on technical specs and materials used * Aesthetic and design qualities * The product's intended use/function and user value * Unique/novel features that consumers would find attractive * How the design and innovation of the product compares to other products in the marketplace Products chosen as Innovations honorees reflect innovative design and engineering of the entries. Examples may include the first time various technologies are combined in a single product or dramatic enhancements to previous product designs. Innovations 2011 Design and Engineering honoree products are featured on www.CESweb.org/Innovations, which lists product categories, as well as each product name, manufacturer information, designer, description, photo and URL.
