Dolby Atmos Drives Strong Hollywood Adoption

Announcing its sixth Dolby Atmos title for 2012, Dolby is excited to confirm the upcoming DreamWorks Animation feature Rise of the Guardians will be released by Paramount Pictures on November 21st, 2012 in Dolby® Atmos. In addition, beyond the announced Warner Bros. title The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (December 14, 2012), two additional Warner Bros. releases – Gravity and Pacific Rim – have also been confirmed to mix and release in Dolby Atmos in 2013.. These three films join the growing list of Dolby Atmos Hollywood titles including Brave (Disney/Pixar), Taken 2, Chasing Mavericks and Life of Pi (Twentieth Century Fox) and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (Warner Bros.). Rise of the Guardians becomes the latest film to implement this new cinema sound technology demonstrating the tremendous momentum Dolby’s innovation is gaining in Hollywood. With Rise of the Guardians, DreamWorks Animation becomes the fourth Hollywood studio to adopt Dolby Atmos to date. Acclaimed re-recording mixer Jim Bolt along with Academy Award® winning re-recording mixer Andy Nelson and Academy Award® winning supervising sound editor, Richard King, will be designing the Dolby Atmos mix that will bring the Rise of the Guardians soundtrack to a new level of realism for audiences. Rise of the Guardians will be mixed in Dolby Atmos for languages including: French, Norwegian, Danish, Latin American Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Castilian Spanish, German, Italian and Chinese Mandarin. “We have seen tremendous support for Dolby Atmos and we are excited to have DreamWorks Animation become the fourth Hollywood studio to adopt the format with Rise of the Guardians, our sixth Dolby Atmos title scheduled for 2012,” said Stuart Bowling, Senior Technical Marketing Manager, Cinema, Dolby Laboratories. “The Dolby Atmos slate for 2013 is also growing with two blockbuster titles from Warner Bros. including Gravity and Pacific Rim confirmed. We look to grow the Dolby Atmos content pipeline for exhibitors as our goal is to reach over 15 titles in 2013.” Currently scheduled to conduct the Dolby Atmos mix for Gravity (release date TBD, 2013) is multiple Academy Award® nominated re-recording mixer Skip Lievsay in collaboration with re-recording mixer Niv Adiri. Academy Award® nominated Glenn Freemantle will be the supervising sound editor and sound designer on the Dolby Atmos mix. At the helm of the Pacific Rim Dolby Atmos mix (scheduled release date: July 12, 2013) will be Academy Award® winning re-recording mixers John T. Reitz and Greg Rudloff who will be accompanied by Tim LeBlanc. Scott Gershin will be the supervising sound editor. Dolby Atmos locations for these features will be announced closer to the release dates. Dolby’s goal is to have 80-100 screens available for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Dolby aims to install an additional 30-50 screen in Q1 of 2013, and expects to have as many as 1,000 Dolby Atmos screens in place by the end of next year.
