RCA High Definition Television Receivers Deliver Riveting Sports Action To Washington, D.C. Crowd

7-Apr-00

The digital high definition television (HDTV) broadcast of the men's college basketball championships - sponsored by RCA - drew thousands of viewers throughout the country this week, including nearly 200 government officials who witnessed the stunning HDTV game on new RCA digital television products at a Washington, D.C. event on Monday evening. Transmitted with the government-approved VSB modulation standard for digital TV and easily received with both rooftop and set-top ""rabbit ear"" antennae by seven digital TV receivers at a Capitol Hill venue, the over-the-air broadcast provided one of the best examples yet of how compelling digital TV programming promises to speed the transition to digital service and lead to new uses for the broadcast spectrum. Among the many displays was one of the new RCA 38-inch HDTV sets hooked to a simple $10 ""rabbit ear"" RCA VHF set-top antenna. ""Even with a jam-packed room full of basketball fans, HDTV reception was rock-solid. This outstanding broadcast proves the potential for high definition television as a medium that will invigorate the electronics and broadcasting industries,"" said Gilbert M. Ravelette, Vice President of Business Strategy and Planning for THOMSON multimedia (SICOVAM: 18453) (NYSE: TMS), the manufacturer and marketer of RCA, GE, and PROSCAN-brand home entertainment products. The HDTV event in Washington happened one week before the nation's broadcasters meet at their annual convention in Las Vegas. RCA HDTV set-top receivers, high resolution monitors, and 61-inch and 38-inch integrated widescreen HDTV sets were used for the championship game, along with RCA-brand set-top and rooftop over-the-air antennae and elliptical dish antennae for DIRECTVÆ HDTV service.
