22-Jun-00

Samsung Electronics America, Inc., officially announced the expansion of their product line into the professional video display market, with a full line of HDTV video format displays at INFOCOMM International 2000. Samsung's line ranges from TFT LCD monitors, rear projection monitors and videowall cubes to plasma displays. INFOCOMM 2000, a showcase of breaking visual and audio communications technology, was the perfect time to highlight Samsung's entrance in to the professional video market. Samsung showcased HDTV format displays and projection devices based on ferro-electric liquid crystal displays (f)LCD with Samsung's patented Reflective Light Drive optical engine. The display products will ranged from plasma to TFT LCD. The key to Samsung's entrance is high definition format compatibility, which includes 1080i, 720p and 480p native resolutions with 16:9 aspect ratio. Samsung will leverage its leadership in flat panel display (FPD) manufacturing by offering a range of FPD technologies. Among these is the (f)LCD (ferro-electric LCD), a reflective device developed by DisplayTech Incorporated. The (f)LCD, combined with Samsung's highly efficient, patented optical system allow for high resolution, lightweight and thin footprint design of rear projection displays and video walls. Samsung is the first manufacturer to successfully commercialize an (f)LCD based product. Samsung has lead the FPD industry in TFT display manufacturing and is now introducing a 24-inch wide UXGA component for it's initial monitor product. Also, coming from its manufacturing lines are a range of plasma displays in 37-inch, 42-inch and 50-inch products. Samsung's extensive experience in digital TV development will help position them as a prominent leader of high definition products in the professional market. Samsung, familiar with professional products in Korea, sold the broadcast industry's first HDTV integrated receiver decoder in the U.S. in October 1998 - now in its second generation and currently sold by partner Harris Corporation as the ARX-H200. Samsung's accomplishments in the consumer market include the launch of the market's first integrated HDTV set in November '98 and the launch of an DTV set-top box for receiving terrestrial DTV signals.
