23-Jun-00

Sigma Designs, Inc. and Streambox, Inc. announced an agreement to support Sigma's REALmagic EM8400 video decoder chip into StreamboxTV, which delivers DVD-quality video over Internet Protocol (IP). StreamboxTV set-top box technologies are Java based and are developed at the chip level. They will incorporate Sigma's EM8400 chipset, which will allow complete MPEG-2 digital video streaming services over Internet Protocol with full VCR control. ""With Sigma's cutting edge chipset and our breakthrough broadband technology, we're sure that StreamboxTV will revolutionize the way broadband entertainment is delivered,"" said Bob Hildeman, Streambox CEO. ""It is widely known that Sigma Designs offers the best MPEG-2 support for broadband video services, so we're confident that StreamboxTV will change the way broadband content is consumed and delivered."" Developed by Russian scientists as well as a former University of Washington HDTV engineer, StreamboxTV will initially roll out to networked communities, schools and hotels. It is a Java-based application that will work on any operating system, including Windows, Embedded NT, Windows CE, Linux and others, as well as set-top boxes. It will allow for video-on-demand and the searching of aggregated content channels, as well as live Internet access. This will provide over one million channels of streaming media content. The partnership leverages the key strengths of each company. Sigma brings industry-leading hardware and software expertise in streaming MPEG-2 and DVD, while Streambox's cutting edge technology will change the way entertainment and information is delivered and consumed. The highly integrated EM8400 also reduces overall system costs. Thinh Tran, Sigma's Chairman and CEO, commented, ""Streambox has established an outstanding reputation as a leader in developing new technologies. With their innovative solutions in streaming media, StreamboxTV is a natural fit for our REALmagic EM8400 chip.""
