BARCO Announces First Generation Of Commercially Available Digital Cinema Projectors

17-Jul-00

BARCO, the world leader in display technology, announced the ""D-CineStar"" Digital Cinema projector to be available starting September of this year. BARCO, which was chosen by Texas Instruments as one of only three worldwide licensees for the DLP Cinemaô chip technology earlier this year, applied its expertise in electronics, optics and mechanics to develop this projector together with Kinoton GmbH, renowned for the high quality of its lamphouses, consoles and 35mm film projectors. The BARCO D-CineStar delivers a 12-foot-lambert brightness on all but the very largest of film screens, combined with a film like contrast ratio of 1000:1 and a 40 percent larger color space than HDTV. The dedicated fully digital 24 frames per second signal input guarantees natural film-like motion. The end result on the screen is bright, stable, uniform images on the screen without jump, weave, flicker or ghosting. To date more than 750,000 people are estimated to have witnessed digital cinema trials in well over 5,000 showings in any of the more than 24 field trial locations in the U.K., France, Belgium, Japan, Canada, Mexico and of course the U.S. ëWe are excited to be part of this revolution in the making"", said Sjoerd De Clerck, Managing Director of Barco Digital Cinema, ""and to work with the industry, cinematographers, producers, studios, distributors and exhibitors alike to quickly solve the remaining technical and business issues. Only in that way will we be able to achieve what it is all about - deliver a better picture for a better cinema experience for the patron!"" Keith Morris, Market Manager Barco Digital Cinema added, ""With our worldwide support structure of national organizations in more than 30 countries and our exclusive distributors in another 20 or so, we feel we are well placed to do justice to this worldwide market and to help and support the exhibitor where ever he may be as he enters the digital age.""
