Faroudja, Inc. (NASDAQ: FDJA) introduced its new flagship DVP5000 digital video processor/scaler at CEDIA EXPO 2000.Faroudja also presented a special technology showcase for digital cinema during the show that will preview a prototype of the companyís Digital Cinema Director, a processor that offers digital SDI inputs and digital HDTV SMPTE 292 output, as well as a prototype DVD transport, the Digital Cinema Source DC100, with digital SDI output. Pricing and delivery are not yet determined.Faroudja is also exhibiting its DVP3000 and DVP2200 digital video processor/scalers. Faroudjaís family of digital video processors incorporates numerous refinements designed to optimize CRT projectors as well as the growing markets of other projector technologies, including DLPô, LCD and plasma. The DVP5000 is the first video processor to automatically upconvert 1080i (interlaced) high-definition signals to 1080p (progressive) resolution. The DVP5000 is said to optimize the performance of high-end 9-inch and 12-inch CRT projectors, as well as fixed-panel displays (LCD, DLPô, D-ILAô, plasma etc.) with resolutions of 1280 x 1024 and above. These fixed-panel displays require a progressive video input. The DVP5000 also automatically upconverts HDTV 480p signals to 960p, while 720p signals pass through the device. Standard 480i sources can be upconverted to 1080p.The picture quality produced by the DVP5000 was voted the best image of the last Winter CES, where it was launched. For standard 480i sources, the DVP5000, like Faroudjaís other video processor/scalers, deinterlaces incoming video signals and eliminates visible artifacts. The technology includes a new algorithm called Directional Correlation Deinterlacingô (DCDi), which is designed to eliminates motion artifacts from video-originated material.Another feature in the DVP5000 is Faroudjaís Scan-Lockô Bandwidth Expansion technology, which is optimized for each output scan rate. The DVP5000 is also a full-featured scaler that provides complete aspect ratio control for anamorphic, letterbox and 4:3 sources. With scan rate scaling, the DVP5000 can convert standard NTSC signals (15.75kHz) to any computer rate up to SXGA resolution as well as HDTV rates of 1080i, 720p and 1080p. The processorís complement of rear-panel connections includes a special HDTV input and 480p component inputs to accommodate the new progressive DVD players. Other inputs include standard component, S-Video and composite. The unit can be controlled with the included multi-component IR remote or from a computer via the RS-232 serial port.A Y/Pr/Pb output option allows the DVP5000 to connect to the growing number of entry-level HDTV-ready sets in which an RGB output may not be compatible.Faroudja's patented Picture Plusô Digital Video Processing is said to transform conventional signals to produce a film-like image. Additional features include two-line Time Base Correction to help stabilize lower quality video sources, a 10-bit broadcast quality chroma decoder and enhanced noise reduction control. The DVP5000 also features the proprietary Adaptive Comb Filter technology. A non-volatile memory stores the settings of all user-adjustable functions, including those for contrast, brightness, color, tint, noise reduction and detail. The DVP3000 digital video processor/scaler comes with the same combination of capabilities and features as the DVP5000, without the HDTV line doubling, from 1080i to 1080p.The DVP2200 digital video processor/scaler offers custom installers a lower cost option while still retaining many of the key features and picture processing capabilities of Faroudjaís other digital video processors. Designed with scan rate scaling to 480p and 600p and built-in aspect ratio control, the DVP2200 converts conventional interlaced video to high-resolution, progressively scanned signals. The DVP5000 and DVP3000 digital video processor/scalers are available now at suggested retail prices of $25,995 and $19,995, respectively. The DVP2200 is available at a suggested price of $7,995. A program is available to upgrade any DVP3000 to a DVP5000. Models specifically for the international market with the added features of PAL processing and Frame Doubling include the DVP2220, DVP3000U and DVP5000U with suggested retails of $9,495, $21,995 and $27,995, respectively. For more information, visit www.faroudja.com.
