The System 500 THX Select Home Theater System is designed to deliver a dynamic, large-scale THX-quality listening experience in small- to medium-sized rooms. Key to the system's exceptional sonic performance are its left and right channel tower speakers with integrated powered subwoofers, each of which employ a built-in 100-watt discrete amplifier with single-band parametric EQ, powering a 10-inch subwoofer for powerful, accurate low-frequency output. This unique configuration also eliminates the need for a separate subwoofer, saving space and eliminating the installation and system integration problems that can be encountered using a separate subwoofer.Complementing the woofers are a one-inch tweeter and a pair of 5 1/4-inch midbass drivers featuring unique aluminum alloy cone material, with each midbass driver handling a different part of the frequency range for improved dynamics, efficiency and high power handling.Rounding out the system are a pair of two-way dipole surround speakers designed to create a wide, enveloping rear surround sound field and a dedicated center-channel speaker featuring two aluminum-alloy 5 1/4-inch mid/bass drivers and a one-inch tweeter, for superb dialog reproduction and a seamless sonic blend with the left and right front loudspeakers.The System 500 loudspeakers are built to extremely high standards, with all transducers designed and engineered in-house. The tweeters are mounted in an elliptical flared recess that controls their dispersion pattern for optimum imaging and soundfield reproduction. The woofers are a special 10-inch long throw design that delivers high output with outstanding presence and low-frequency definition.All loudspeakers in the System 500 utilize premium internal parts, including Mordaunt-Short's exclusive DVPCô (Dual Value Parallel) audiophile-grade capacitors, high-power neodymium driver magnets, bi-wirable gold-plated binding posts and other refinements. All drivers are back-mounted to the baffle to minimize diffraction. The enclosures are built from MDF and feature dual-layer front baffles, constructed from two layers of different density materials to attenuate unwanted resonances. All floor-standing models can be filled with lead shot or sand for tighter, extended bass performance.
