Panamax, the award-winning manufacturer of surge suppression products, has improved the PRIMAXÆ design, with new protective circuitry and a dual ULÆ Listing. The PRIMAX Surge Arrester and Transient Voltage Suppressor is designed to clamp surges at a residential or light commercial circuit breaker box. PRIMAX protects small business and residence appliances from short duration power spikes and surges, including lightning. The unit is particularly convenient for safeguarding large hard-wired appliances, such as a stove or dishwasher, where plug-in surge protectors canít be used. PRIMAX is designed to be used in conjunction with home or small business ""point of use"" surge protectors, providing total protection against the financial and operational losses caused by internal and external electrical disturbances.""What many home and business owners donít realize, is that they need both ëservice entranceí and ëpoint of useí protection,"" says Dr. Richard Cohen, Vice President of Technology at Panamax. ""The nationwide rise in external power disturbances has become a serious threat due to power grid overloads, decreased maintenance, and deregulation within the electrical utility industry. This is in addition to the other external problems that already plague many residences, such as lightning, or accidents involving power poles and downed lines.""The improved PRIMAX design has received a dual UL Listing for the two installation options now available - before the main disconnect as a surge arrester, or after the main disconnect as a transient voltage surge suppressor (TVSS). The UL surge arrester standard (based on ANSI C62.41) is for protectors intended for the utility side of the main service disconnect. The 1449 standard applies to TVSS protectors on the load side of the service disconnect, for both plug-in and permanently wired applications. PRIMAX meets Canadian Standards as well.Dr. Cohen adds that, ""In fact, PRIMAX far exceeds the surge arrester standard. The most severe UL test is a 10,000A impulse - PRIMAX withstands a 60,000A impulse on each phase. The new PRIMAX also has a TVSS voltage rating of only 400 volts, unusually low for a protector of this type. This low ëlet-throughí voltage provides improved safety for your equipment."" PRIMAX also provides a convenient ground bus, that meets electrical code requirements, for use by telephone and CATV installers. Without PRIMAX, installers often find that there is no ground available, and resort to an independent driven ground rod, which is ineffective and not acceptable under the electrical code. PRIMAX may be installed either indoors or outdoors. PRIMAX is connected to the ground and two phase wires in the meter pan or main panel. In normal operation, the unit's two LED lights are illuminated. In the event of a surge, MOVs (Metal Oxide Varistors) instantly shunt the impulses to ground. If the unit is damaged by a surge or over-voltage outside its rating, one or both LED lights go out and the unique alarm buzzer sounds. This alerts the homeowner to call for a free replacement from Panamax using the toll-free 800 number clearly printed on the PRIMAX front label. PRIMAX retails for $169.00 in the U.S. The unit is available in both a side mount (model GS13) and back mount (model GB13) design. PRIMAX comes with a five-year product warranty, and a three-year, $10,000 Connected Appliance Warranty. For total coverage, Panamax also offers an extensive line of internal ""point of use"" surge protectors for home and small businesses. For additional information regarding Panamax, visit the Panamax web site at www.panamax.com.
