Featuring ""total immersion"" surround music environments and giveaways of more than $20,000 of the latest high-tech audio components, BuzzNet 2000 roared onto two leading California campuses in October, leaving a collective ""Wow!"" in its wake. Sponsored by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), BuzzNet provided students at the California State University at Long Beach and the University of California at Davis with direct ""ears-on"" experiences of the new high-resolution, surround music formats that are revolutionizing the way recorded music is heard and enjoyed.""Someone on campus told me this thing called BuzzNet was happening but I had no idea what to expect,"" said student Tiqula Bledsoe. ""After experiencing it, all I can say is 'Wow!' This new stuff pumps the music straight into your head!""""In a way, it breaks my heart,"" laughed fellow student Foster Chen, ""because I thought I had a killer sound system! Now I've got something really great to shoot for."" Added his friend Greg Davis: ""I knew about surround but I had never heard a side-by-side comparison with stereo like this and that was really cool.""Students, faculty and local press who attended the events had the opportunity to experience the ""Ultimate Dorm Room Sound System,"" a ""Rolling Thunder"" automobile specially outfitted for surround music on the road, and new technology that provides an astonishingly real ""virtual surround"" experience through any set of ordinary headphones. A home-sized theatre provided a head-turning comparison between stereo and the new 5.1 (six-channel) surround music that immerses listeners in the music in a way never before possible.New surround music tracks from Venice Underground, Big Phat Band, Aaron Neville and others provided the hot sounds for the BuzzNet demos. ""It's not even like being in the audience at a live concert,"" commented Kevin Dean about the home theater demo. ""It's like being on stage with the band!"" Holly Chan's reaction to the headphone demo was typical of attendee reaction: ""Amazing! How does it work?"" The F-250 truck outfitted with 8,000 watts of pulsing surround sound brought repeated exclamations of ""Awesome!"" ""MomÖget me one of these!"" added Clement Ng. ""I don't even need a house, I can just live in it.""More than 40 students won new audio components in hourly drawings at the two campuses. In addition, thousands of copies of a CEA specially produced BuzzNet brochure explaining the new technologies, and the latest issues of ""Sound & Vision"" and ""Mobile Entertainment"" magazines were distributed to attendees.""BuzzNet lets our member companies reach today's most vital segment of the consumer electronics market - young adults,"" commented CEA President and CEO Gary Shapiro. ""This group not only has a lot of spending power, they lead the way in adopting new music listening technologies.""Photos and articles about the BuzzNet 2000 events are available online at www.buzznet.org.
