22-Nov-00

To supplement what is already the world's largest educational forum for the consumer electronics industry, the 2001 International CES will include the University 4Mobility, sponsored by the Andrew Seybold Group, in its conference program. The 2001 International CES will be held Saturday, January 6 through Tuesday, January 9 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The 2001 International CES features more than 90 conference sessions. The University 4Mobility will be held on Friday, January 5, the day before exhibits open. ""Wireless is becoming one of the most talked about product areas in the consumer technologies industry,"" said Karen Chupka, Vice President of Events and Conferences for the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). ""With so much interest, we are supplementing our own conference track with the University 4Mobility to ensure our attendees are prepared and up-to-date for the wireless market."" In fact, according to CEA Market Research, total factory sales of wireless products are projected to exceed $4.5 billion in 2001, an increase of more than 12 percent over projections for 2000. Registration for this program is not included in the CES conference pass. Attendees will have the option of choosing from one of two morning sessions and will convene as a group for the afternoon session. The cost of the University 4Mobility is $245 for those registering through December 15, 2000 and $295 thereafter. For more information on registration and pricing, visit www.CESweb.org. The University 4Mobility features three conference sessions addressing the basics of wireless, why it's the ""next big thing,"" and the realities of wireless voice and data capabilities today and into the near future. ""The Basics Of Wireless Data Communication,"" a morning session lead by Andrew Seybold, will cover radio systems and types, explains the differences between analog and digital systems, discusses types of wireless data systems including analog cellular, CDPD, Motient, BellSouth Wireless Data, Metricom, one-way, one-and-a-half-way, and two-way paging services, digital cellular, satellite, and in-building wireless systems. Additional course material includes the marriage of computer and communications systems (Bluetoothô, for example), the current status of the wireless data industry, and a look into the future. ""Wireless Applications And Wireless Portals,"" led by Barney Dewey, will review popular wireless applications, including Japan's i-mode offering, as well as U.S. wireless portals. The failure of WAP marketplace will be analyzed, and the success factors and challenges for delivering content to handheld wireless devices will be discussed using examples of active content. Location services and technologies and wireless enablement platforms also will be explained, in addition to the usability threshold, and how Bluetooth changes the rules for wireless devices. In the afternoon session, ""The Mobile Internet Today & Tomorrow,"" Seybold and Dewey will conduct panel discussions with industry experts that will cover trends in the wireless world, including the use of wireless networks to send photographic images and consumer acceptance of wireless advertising. The latest wireless products also will be demonstrated. ""The University 4Mobility is a very welcomed addition,"" said Chupka. ""We're pleased to have both Andrew Seybold and Barney Dewey share their insights and experiences with our CES audience."" Andrew Seybold, founder of the Andrew Seybold Group, LLC, has been involved with both the communications and computing industries for the past 30-plus years.
