Digital Projection, Inc. (DPI) - a wholly owned subsidiary of IMAXÆ Corporation - announced that the 2001 Sundance Film Festival has exclusively selected its digital projectors for the festival's digital film screenings. The announcement marks the third consecutive year DPI has provided projectors for what is considered the elite event for independent American films, and this year every genre of film will have digital entries, including a high definition premiere, documentaries, features and shorts. DPI will provide nearly 20 of its high-performance projectors based on DLPô technology by Texas Instruments for a total 12 theatres/venues. At least 15 independent digital films are currently scheduled to be displayed during the prestigious festival, held in Park City, Utah (January 18-28, 2001). Filmmakers electing to create in the digital domain submitted films on a variety of electronic media, including a few who transferred film to high definition video. DPI will also provide the projectors for the festival's internationally televised awards ceremony on the closing night. ""The extraordinary clarity of image, brightness and ease of use associated with Digital Projection's technology sets it apart in the digital projection world,"" said Ian Calderon, a Founder of the Sundance Institute. ""Digital Projection's technology offers filmmakers working in digital media the kind of quality usually associated with big budget film productions."" In addition to the festival, Calderon added that Digital Projection's technology is also featured during the Sundance Filmmaker's Lab. Held in June, the event offers visiting filmmakers the opportunity to collaborate with Sundance's creative advisors and then present their works in a full digital cinema environment on DPI's high performance projectors. ""Digital Projection is deeply committed to providing independent filmmakers with visual tools that will continue to drive the widespread paradigm shift associated with digital film display and we think Sundance is the perfect venue for that to happen. DPI is proud to supply the Sundance Film Festival for the third year in a row, advanced projection systems that increase a filmmaker's opportunity to display their creative works,"" said Chuck Collins, DPI's National Market Development Manager.
