22-Jan-01

According to the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), year-to-date numbers remain hot with total sale stopping the $8 billion mark to move up seven percent for the year. While all audio sectors took a step back in November, resulting in a modest decline of five percent, audio products still managed to bring in an impressive $854 million in revenues for the month. Sales to dealers of separate audio components dipped less than four percent in the month of November compared to the same period in 1999, but overall, sales of separate audio components have had an outstanding year - up seven percent to $1.4 billion in revenue thus far. Audio systems held even ground with the prior year, with sales dollars equaling $270 million in November. Within this category, home-theatre-in-a-box continued its torrid growth rate with a 47 percent increase. Overall for the year, audio systems are up six percent to $2 billion. The largest sector in the audio products category, portable audio, has generated robust year-to-date industry revenues of more than $2.5 billion, a 13 percent increase over the same period last year. Aftermarket auto sound brought in $162 million in November, which is down (eight percent) from the same time last year. However, within the category, amplifier sales remain loud and clear for the year with an increase of six percent up to $20 million. Stephen Baker, Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Denon Electronics, Inc., and Chair of CEA's Audio Division, stated, ""This has been a year to remember for the audio industry. We have seen growth in every major category and anticipate this trend to continue in the months to come. I fully expect the momentum that the audio industry has generated this year to carry over into 2001."" For more information about the CEA, visit www.ce.org.
