Zenith Supports VSB Digital Television Standard

Zenith Electronics Corporation, a leader in digital high definition television (HDTV) and developer of the vestigial sideband (VSB) transmission system, commended the nation's leading broadcast trade groups today for their joint decision reaffirming industry support for the FCC's approved U.S. digital television (DTV) standard.The boards of directors of the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) and the Association for Maximum Service Television (MSTV) adopted a resolution that states: ""We conclude that there is insufficient evidence to add COFDM and we therefore reaffirm our endorsement of the VSB standard.""Richard M. Lewis, Zenith Senior Vice President said, ""The VSB standard has been vindicated and, with this announcement, the industry can move forward with VSB enhancements to further expand DTV's capabilities for consumers and broadcasters alike.""""Having lost at the FCC last year and now having suffered yet another stinging defeat, COFDM zealots should abandon the politics of obstruction and admit that their delay strategy has failed,"" Lewis said. ""We hope they will now join the leading broadcasters in moving the DTV transition forward - by completing DTV station conversions and providing compelling HDTV content.""Under the transition timetable mandated by the FCC, all commercial broadcasters must have a digital TV signal on the air no later than May 1, 2002 - noncommercial broadcasters have until May 1, 2003 to be up and running digitally.
