Home Theatre Hits The Roof With New Sonance Symphony Round Surround In-Ceiling Loudspeaker

23-Jan-01

Sonance, the Leader in Architectural Audioô, introduced the first ever in-ceiling home theatre surround sound loudspeaker, the RS1. This distinctive design by Sonance allows for expanded applications as consumers seek surround sound in areas where wall space is at a premium. A complement to Sonanceís sought-after Symphony line of speakers, the RS1 features a two-way round design that has two tweeters positioned at offsetting angles on a bridge above the 6.5-inch woofer. The RS1ís in-ceiling design makes it possible to achieve a home theatre experience in any room of the house. Because it can be difficult to find a location for in-wall or on-wall surround speakers, the application-driven RS1 provides a solution for easy system integration and gives end users and installers more options for home theatre systems. The RS1 surround speaker can be installed in any in-ceiling application for small to medium theatres, and depending on the desired effect, users may install one pair of RS1s for surround sound or two pairs for Surround EXô-type back surround. ""We have made great strides in home theatre speaker technology, providing the quality sound listeners expect from Sonance in as many applications as possible,"" said Chip Brown, Chief Operating Officer, Sonance. ""With the introduction of the RS1, we are continuing to build on that goal and, for the first time, enabling consumers to have surround sound in virtually any room of the house. Consumers now have the products they need to create a system that fits their space and lifestyle."" Listeners will hear the premium acoustics for which Sonance is known. The key to their superior sound is the design of the speakerís components. Positioned at offsetting five-degree angles, the two tweeters are mounted to create a diffused sound field for optimum surround sound performance. Because of its round shape, the speaker may be rotated before it is locked into position so that the tweeters are placed at the best angle for even sound dispersion. The dual 2-inch tweeters sit on a bridge above a 6.5-inch woofer with a black glass composite cone with a rubber surround. The RS1 handles 5 to 125 watts with an efficiency of 90dB at 1 watt/1m. Its frequency response is 55Hz-20kHz +/-3dB and the impedance is 8 ohms nominal and 7 ohms minimum. A metal/cloth grill covers the speaker, which measures 9 3/4 x 4 3/4 inches. Expanding the home theatre applications within the Symphony series, the RS1 sonically matches the full line of Symphony products. The RS1 also will fit into the Symphony line of acoustic enclosures in new construction, preventing resonance and containing the sound in the chosen area. For retrofit applications, the companyís scientifically researched Sonafill system provides back-box performance without the box. Available the first quarter of 2001, the RS1s will retail for $500 per pair. For more information, visit Sonance on the Web at www.sonance.com.
