Latest Cybertube Slim Tubes Have Significantly Reduced Depth, Enabling TV Makers To Create New, Even Slimmer Set Designs

12-Feb-01

Philips Components presented the latest innovation of its award-winning Cybertube Real Flat TV tubes - the Cybertube Slim at the 2001 CES. Cybertube Slim is a breakthrough in CRT depth reduction. The front-rear depth of the tube has been reduced by 20 percent, corresponding with a volume reduction of approximately 15 percent. With this significant depth reduction, Cybertube Slim gives television set manufacturers the opportunity to capture consumersí attention with new and even slimmer set designs. At the 2001 CES, Philips Display Components presented demonstrations of the Cybertube Slim tubes to customers and media only at the Hotel Bellagio. These demonstrations were based on specially prepared high definition program software to show the outstanding reproduction of these new tubes to the fullest extent. The tubes presented were in 36-inch screen size, to be followed later in the year by other sizes. The market launch is expected to take place during the second half of 2001. Also on display were tube innovations for the computer monitor market, including a new 17-inch Cybertube model with real flat screen surface and a 19-inch Slim tube with the compact footprint of a standard 17 inch unit. Completing Philips Display Componentsí presentation at the CES was a wide selection of other models in its global CRT range. Benefits For Both Manufacturers And Consumers The new Cybertube Slim concept offers significant benefits right through the value chain. Consumers will benefit from the outstanding, slim set design that these new tubes make possible. This results in space-saving sets that are more fashionable and more mobile, with a distinctively new and slimmer design. At the same time, end users will appreciate the state-of-the-art viewing experience that Cybertube Slim offers, thanks to its truly flat, distortion-free screen with brilliant, natural colors and superb contrast. Significant Economic Benefits As well as its outstanding image quality, Cybertube Slim offers significant economic benefits to TV set manufacturers. Reducing the design-in and re-engineering workload and cutting time-to-market to a minimum, system integration has been greatly simplified. By retaining the majority of the electrical and mechanical parameters, Cybertube Slim is aimed to be ëdrop-iní compatible in sets using existing chassis designs. Further attention has also been given to environmental issues in the development of the new Cybertube Slim concept, for example with an innovative design to give the lowest weight by reduction of the glass content for this tube configuration. Full Range Of Cybertube-Related Product Concepts As well as the new Cybertube Slim TV tubes, Philips Display Components alsoed show its complete range of Cybertube Real Flat and related product concepts at CES. These included new Cybertube real flat tubes in a wider range of screen sizes including 34, 32, 29, 28 and 21 inches. Also on show were the mainstream Black Square and BlackLine Super Flat TV tubes for the U.S. and European markets, respectively. New GPM Technology In Cybertube Slim As the latest development in Philips Display Componentsí Cybertube Real Flat line, Cybertube Slim has been made possible by the next-generation Gun Pitch Modulation (GPM) technology. This system uses a new main lens - the DCFL or Distributed Composed Field Lens - to further optimize the spot performance and resolution. Gun Pitch Modulation is the only tube technology on the market today that allows a varying distance to be achieved between the tubeís virtually flat inner screen and the curved shadow mask. The result is optimal spot performance across the entire screen area, from the center right out to the corners. By modulating the distance between the three electron beams as they are scanned across the screen, the result is a truly flat TV picture image. As a result, Cybertube Real Flat is capable of displaying picture resolutions up to SVGA, and meets the high-resolution standards for digital TV (1080i). Commitment To Constant Innovations With the new Cybertube Slim tubes, Philips Display Components further underlines its technology leadership in the CRT marketplace, and provides evidence of its commitment to constant innovations in this area. The resulting tube products meet manufacturersí demands for constantly higher standards of image quality, with tubes that offer easy design-in and optimum cost of ownership right through the value chain.
