Levitonís New Information Technology Packages Support Fully Networked Home

28-Feb-01

Americans spend 300 million hours a month in front of their computers: half the homes across America have at least one PC, 42 percent are on-line and three million use broadband technologies such as cable and DSL lines. As more and more people work from home and use the Internet for schoolwork, shared gaming and e-mail, the demand for home networking systems will continue to grow. These trends point to the need for home systems capable of delivering high-speed Internet and home networking capabilities. Levitonís Residential Information Technology Packages afford homeowners substantial flexibility in ensuring their home is wired for the future. The offering consists of four packages that range in complexity from the most basic to the most sophisticated. The Essential Package supports telephone, data line and coaxial connections to six locations throughout the home. For larger homes requiring a higher level of capacity, The Enhanced Package affords the next level of home technology performance with dual coaxial cable and Category 5 data communication access. It supports high speed Internet (including DSL, cable modem, ISDN), in-home networks and whole-house entertainment systems. The flagship of the offering, The Networked Home Package supports active video distribution as well as home networking connections. The Whole House Networking Upgrade supports networked PCs and peripherals for shared Internet access, gaming, and small office/home office (SOHO) applications. At the heart of the Levitonís Structured Media Group Packages are Levitonís Structured Media Centers - distribution hubs that support a full range of multimedia distribution components for the home. The media centers are available in three sizes and serve as the central command center for the homeís data, audio, video and phone connections, making cable runs and media management simple and cost-effective. Part of the Networked Home Package, Levitonís Vestal Router with WatchGuard Technologyís WatchGuardÆ Internet Security feature is a firewall-based Internet sharing device. It permits up to 50 computers (with additional hardware and client user five-packs) on a home or small office/home office (SOHO) LAN to securely connect to the Internet using a single shared high-speed DSL, cable modem, ISDN or leased-line connection. The optional WatchGuard firewall protects the entire network from unwelcome intrusion by blocking unauthorized access with Dynamic Stateful Packet Inspection. By subscribing to the WatchGuard LiveSecurity, Residential/SOHO users benefit from the same industrial-grade firewall security used by businesses and schools to protect their networks. The system protects computers and sensitive data from unauthorized access 24 hours a day, seven days a week - an important consideration with ""always-on"" DSL or cable modems. It also provides an ideal way to help protect children from inappropriate Internet content. Levitonís 10-BaseT Networking Hub (Essential Package) and 10/100Base-T Networking Hub (Enhanced Package) permit the sharing of data and peripherals among many computers in remote locations via cable runs from desired locations to a Leviton Category 5 voice and data module. Category 5 patch cords are used to connect the data hub to the Category 5 module so remote locations can communicate. This enables a computer in the kitchen to print to a home office printer or a computer in the home office to retrieve information from a computer in the bedroom. The devices permit cascading of up to four hubs to provide a maximum of 14 networked stations (up to 17 with the 10/100BaseT hubs). The 10Base-T networking hub provides a broad range of features to ensure data integrity. LEDs on the device indicate power, link/receive, partition and collision status. The 10/100Base-T networking hub is the ideal choice for demanding home office and telecommuting applications, offering 100Mbps performance ideal for sharing high-speed and high capacity devices such as storage devices and backup systems. Levitonís QuickPortô snap-in jacks and modules provide a quick, convenient way to terminate data, phone, audio and video connections in any combination in a single wallbox. QuickPort wallplates feature port openings to accommodate any combination of QuickPort Modules, eliminating the need to install separate wallplates for each home wiring connection. Modules snap directly into the ports, allowing for the custom configuration of wallplates on the job site to meet any range of application requirements.
