Hughes Network Systems (HNS), a leading manufacturer of DIRECTVÆ digital satellite receivers, announced the availability of a new DIRECTV receiver model that incorporates TiVo's Personal TV service. Production began in December, and units are now available through online retailers and HNS' nationwide distributor network. Allowing consumers to watch what they want, when they want, the new DIRECTV Receiver with Tivoô will give consumers more choice, convenience, and control by seamlessly combining the DIRECTV programming service and on-screen guide with TiVoÆ. The receiver provides access to more than 225 channels of DIRECTV programming including movies, sports, and pay-per-view, as well as local channels in 41 markets. With TiVo technology, TV viewers can customize their entertainment experience by manipulating live TV and digitally recording up to 35 hours of DIRECTV programming without videotape. In addition, a new Advanced Program Guide (APG) from DIRECTV allows consumers to review program listings up to 14 days in advance. ""The introduction of our DIRECTV Receiver with TiVo service marks another exciting step forward for HUGHES,"" said Paul Gaske, Executive Vice President and General Manager of HNS' Consumer Division. ""We released our first-generation DIRECTV set-top products in March 1996 and have shipped over six million units since then. The new TiVo product represents our continued commitment to delivering the most innovative products to consumers everywhere."" ""TiVo is very excited about leveraging HUGHES' product leadership and trusted brand name,"" said Joe Miller, TiVo's Vice President of Sales. ""Together, we will change the way consumers experience television."" ""DIRECTV is dedicated to providing our customers with the best in digital quality entertainment and our partnerships with HUGHES and TiVo further demonstrate our commitment to develop and deploy new interactive services,"" said Larry Chapman, President, DIRECTV Global Digital Media, Inc. The new HUGHES product, in addition to incorporating TiVo capability, offers a variety of high-end features, including DolbyÆ Digital output and an exclusive video user manual. The HUGHES DIRECTV Receiver with TiVo was previewed for the first time last month at the 2001 International Consumer Electronics Show.
