PS Audio, an innovator for the last 30 years in developing high performance audio components, embarks this week on an unusual interactive ""reality program"" - designing and building from scratch a reference quality listening room and home theatre. What makes the adventure unique is its transparency and PS Audio's real-time risk taking. The company is building the Great Listening Room, as it's called, in 1,000-square feet of empty office space in nearby Vail, Colorado. A goal of the project is to help PS Audio design products that better meet the needs of its customers. To help achieve this, PS Audio will take its customers along for every step of the journey, as well as the many other readers of its popular Web site, www.psaudio.com. From raw space to home theatre, PS Audio will describe and illustrate every design decision it makes, and explain how it copes with each new challenge the project involves as it happens.Led by CEO Paul McGowan, a widely recognized audio/video designer, the project will cover room treatment, electrical wiring, AC power, speaker placement, cable selection, video projection, and much more. Why write about it so publicly? ""We can't tell you how many questions and e-mails we get asking for advice about these issues,"" said McGowan. ""So we decided that as long as we're going to build a custom listening room from the bottom up, we should invite everyone to join in.""Followers of the Great Listening Room project, updated weekly on www.psaudio.com, are invited to offer suggestions and ask questions as the room takes shape. McGowan expects ""it will be a good learning experience for us all,"" with both the company and interested readers benefiting - readers from the experience of watching a high-performance environment take shape in real time, and PS Audio from the suggestions and advice of its audience. In Phase One, the space will be developed for use as a two-channel sound room, laying down what McGowan describes as a ""necessary sonic foundation."" In Phase Two, PS Audio will further transform the space into a complete home theatre featuring a video projector and the latest multichannel surround sound equipment. The goal is to create a space that embodies the best of both worlds.PS Audio's key products include the award-winning Power Plant line of personal power regenerators, the new Ultimate Outlet for clean pre-conditioned power, the reference quality Lab Cable and Mini Lab Cable, the innovative Video Lens video processor, and the modular PowerFrame Amplifier System.
