2-Mar-01

In a move to develop a compatible, end-to-end digital theatre management system for exhibition customers, QuVIS and National Cinema Network (NCN) today announced plans to collaborate, providing a solution for exhibitors who are interested in managing digital content in their multiplexes. Each company has developed and is currently deploying modular pieces of the overall solution; QuVIS focusing on the compression and security software, NCN addressing the overall management and scheduling of any digital content needed by an exhibitor. QuVIS and NCN are developing what will become a state-of-the-art digital media management system for the multiplex environment. The first site will be AMC's Olathe 30, near NCN's headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri. NCN's Digital Theatre Distribution Systemô (DTDS) is already operational in the theatre, which is equipped with QuVIS' server, QuBitô. NCN's knowledge of cinema advertising and the movie theatre environment, combined with QuVIS' compression and server technology, facilitates the delivery of entertainment, advertising and feature content with security, accountability and quality. ""NCN brings a clear perspective on system requirements and how they need to evolve. Their expertise in the industry will enhance QuVIS' ability to meet exhibitors' expectations for managing our imaging technology,"" said George Scheckel, Vice President of Digital Cinema and Content Production for QuVIS. ""Digital cinema, and the alternative programming opportunities made possible with the technology, will need effective and systematic tools to satisfy the studios, content distributors and the theatre chains. NCN and QuVIS will offer a viable solution to meet these needs."" As theatre systems throughout the world are upgraded to enable the delivery of digital cinema as a replacement for film, theatre owners will be able to access new digital content including concerts, Broadway performances and distance learning. The theatre system will facilitate the receipt of secured digital content for live and stored programs, management of that content while in the multiplex and assuring that security and rights management issues are properly addressed. ""QuVIS has always talked to NCN about a complete, secure systems approach for distributing and presenting content. Our DTDS provides an immediate platform that we can enhance with QuVIS' technology and meet our customers' expectations in the emerging digital cinema market,"" said Adrian Toader, Senior Vice President of Business Development and Operations for NCN. ShoWest QuBit will serve as the content source for a number of digital cinema displays at ShoWest 2001 including exhibits hosted by BARCO, Boeing, Christie Digital Systems, Digital Projection, Texas Instruments and Miramax Films. As guest presenter for a Christie Digital Systems d-cinema information session, George Scheckel will discuss digital cinema server technology, alternative content and past, present and future applications and advancements. The program is scheduled for 5:30pm, March 5, in Las Vegas Ballroom 3, Bally's Hotel. NCN will showcase its digital entertainment program and DTDSô on Tuesday, March 6, prior to MGM's 10:30am. screening of ""Heartbreakers."" On Wednesday, March 7, NCN President Chuck Battey will speak about advertising opportunities afforded by digital technology during the ""Business Issues Of Digital Cinema: Turning The Dream Into A Reality,"" seminar from 2:30 to 3:45pm.
