Boeing To Deliver Premiere Of Miramax Filmsí ""Spy Kids"" At Disneyís California Adventure

First-Ever Premiere Film To Be Digitally Transmitted Via Satellite

9-Mar-01

The world's first-ever digitally transmitted and projected feature film premiere, of Dimension Films' ""Spy Kids,"" will be the main attraction at Disney's new California Adventure theme park on Sunday, March 18, at a benefit for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and Children's Diabetes Center at UCLA. Boeing Satellite Systems (BSS), a unit of The Boeing Company (NYSE: BA), is hosting the event and will use its Boeing Digital Cinema system to deliver ""Spy Kids"" to the park's Hyperion Theater. Prior to the premiere, park visitors will be treated to a parade up Main Street, featuring several of the actors in ""Spy Kids,"" which will be released in theatres across the country on March 31, 2001. Boeing Digital Cinema is a network system that digitally transmits first-run films directly to movie theatres via satellite-based and fiber optic networks. As a digital film, ""Spy Kids"" will retain the clarity and quality of its first showing for the duration of its theatrical run. Miramax Films' ""Bounce"" was the first film distributed using this technology, in November of 2000. ""Last November's digital delivery of Miramax Films' ëBounceí was a prototype demonstration of Boeing digital cinema's capability,"" said Tig H. Krekel, President of Boeing Satellite Systems. ""Now, with ëSpy Kids,í we are stepping up to the plate to digitally transmit a full-length motion picture for its theatrical premiere. ""This will be the first time a film has been sent over satellite for a Hollywood premiere, and shows the confidence that this leading film company has in Boeing. We're ready for the motion picture industry to take a good look at the real benefits of Boeing Digital Cinema."" Written and directed by Robert Rodriguez, ""Spy Kids"" stars Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino as super spies who retire to raise a family. When they are kidnapped, it is up to their resourceful children Daryl Sabara and Alexa Vega to free mom and dad from the clutches of super bandit Alan Cumming. ""Spy Kids"" will be released by Dimension Films, a division of Miramax Films. Boeing digital cinema relies on proven Boeing satellite technology honed during the company's nearly four decades in the satellite telecommunications field. The service is also backed by BSS' years of secure data delivery for the U.S. government and incorporates the latest in big systems satellite communication design and technology. In addition to first-run films, a theatre outfitted with the Boeing digital cinema system can also enhance its revenues by screening alternative media. This means that sporting events, Broadway plays, rock concerts and corporate training or distance learning can be included in the mix of offerings at a local theatre. BSS is the world's leading manufacturer of communications satellites and a major provider of space systems, satellites, and payloads for national defense, science and environmental applications.
