DVD Player Sales Continue To Thrive In February

Camcorders Sales Also On The Rise

15-Mar-01

According to figures released by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), sales of DVD players continued their string of unprecedented growth during the month of February, posting an increase of 39 percent over February 2000 on sales of 556,000 units. The February sales mark 33 consecutive weeks of increases for the DVD player, the ""fastest selling consumer electronics product of all time."" Additionally, camcorder sales grew by 13 percent over February of last year, with unit sales of 340,000. Despite these gains, total manufacturer-to-dealer sales of video products fell by one percent during the month to a total of four million units, due to decreases in other video categories. ""Consumer concerns about the economy, coupled with continued inventory trimming at retail has slowed sales in the first quarter for mature categories,"" said Gary Shapiro, President and CEO of CEA. ""Despite these factors, consumer interest in video is still very high and strong sales of DVD, analog and digital large-screen TVs, and digital camcorders are proof the industry will post solid growth in the long run.""
