Motorola Inc. (NYSE: MOT) and Konka Group Co., Ltd., a global consumer electronics company based in China, are bringing affordable digital television (DTV) to U.S. consumers. Konka, China's largest exporter of color TVs, intends to use Motorola's MCT5100 M-DTVô module to deliver precise picture clarity and CD-quality audio by integrating it into an existing analog TV chassis with minimum changes. The module, part of Motorola's DigitalDNAô embedded solutions portfolio, converts digital TV signals to the existing analog TV format reducing the cost of bringing digital technology to the market. ""By integrating Motorola's advanced M-DTV module in our TVs, we are able to enter the digital TV market quickly and economically,"" said Wendy Wu, Executive Vice President, Konka USA Ltd. Konka's SD3286U analog digital TV is capable of receiving digital TV signals and is NTSC and ATSC compatible. The enhanced digital display provided by Motorola's M-DTV will provide consumers with extremely high quality viewing experience. A product sample of the M-DTV module embedded in Konka's SD3286U digital television was shown at the 2001 CES. The MCT5100 M-DTV module integrates Motorola's 8-level vestigial sideband (8-VSB) MCT2100 demodulator, an MPEG decoder and controller to implement a complete Advanced Television Standards Committee (ATSC) digital television. Also included in the module is the MCT4000, a transport and video processor for digital television applications. The MCT5100 M-DTV module accepts analog IF input from the TV, and features conventional stereo audio output, DolbyÆ Digital (5.1 channel audio data output), a choice of multiple video output formats, and an I2C control port.
