Princeton Selects Silicon Image Pure Progressiveô Digital Video Processing Technology For Innovative, Multi-Purpose Monitor

One Of Several Recent Wins To Broaden Market Penetration Of SiI 503ô Deinterlacer/Scaler

23-May-01

Silicon Image, Inc. (NASDAQ: SIMG), a price/performance leader in high-bandwidth semiconductor solutions for mass markets, announced that the company's Pure Progressiveô digital video processing technology has been incorporated into Princeton Graphic Systems' Ai3.6HD direct-view Internet TV, along with several other leading-edge TVs and projectors. Rated ""excellent"" in a hands-on test of new products in the May 22, 2001 issue of PC Magazine, the Princeton Ai3.6HD is the first TV to integrate Silicon Image's SiI 503ô deinterlacer/scaler, which has also been designed into three projectors and a plasma display from a leading Japanese consumer electronics manufacturer. ""Following the SiI 503's recent success in the DVD arena, these consumer electronics wins demonstrate the broad applications for our digital video processing technology. DVD, TV, and projector manufacturers alike have recognized the merits of the SiI 503's advanced motion-adaptive and source-adaptive video processing, which create incredibly detailed images,"" said Parviz Khodi, Vice President of Marketing for Silicon Image. ""These wins are also significant because they reflect demand for our display solutions beyond our traditional PC market."" In a review titled ""If You Could Have Only One Monitor,"" PC Magazine referred to the Ai3.6HD as a ""...killer display, which handles multiple video sources extremely well."" Reviewer Bruce Brown went on to note that ""standard definition NTSC video signals are automatically line-doubled using Silicon Image motion adaptive deinterlacing. The upshot here is that even regular cable or satellite signals, DVDs, laserdiscs, and game console input look smoother than conventional television."" ""In developing our Princeton Ai3.6HD HD-ready Ch.1-enabled Internet/TV, our goal was to produce the ultimate 4:3 CRT display for videophiles, professionals and discerning consumers,"" stated Rey Roque, Vice President of Princeton HDTV Products. ""Our lab testing has shown that the SiI 503's ability to seamlessly bring any analog source material into the digital domain, without introducing motion and interlacing artifacts, has been unmatched by other deinterlacers. Our SiI 503 board-level integration also allows us to offer component video input, defeatable and variable edge enhancement, and separate control of color and tint. All are significant enhancements over our previous external implementations of other deinterlacing chipsets."" The Ai3.6HD is the first and only television to offer complete convergence of television, HDTV capability, computer monitor resolution, and integrated Web access. The 36-inch television set allows users to connect to any TV source at digital television resolution and will display all HDTV formats including 480p, 1080i, and 720p. This allows consumers to watch HDTV in its native format. The Ai3.6HD also displays computer graphics with the quality of a computer monitor, accommodating VGA, SVGA and XGA resolutions. In addition, the Ai3.6HD provides direct Internet access and can also be connected to a home computer network. A highly integrated, single-chip solution, the SiI 503 features a deinterlacer, horizontal scaler, color lookup table, chroma up-sampler, memory controller, color space converter, and LCD/CRT controller. The SiI 503 performs interlace-to-progressive scan conversion without introducing deinterlacing or scaling artifacts. Motion artifacts are detected and corrected on a pixel-by-pixel basis, as opposed to other systems that utilize full-frame detection, resulting in remarkably clear and flicker-free pictures. The Princeton Ai3.6HD direct TV lists for $3,499 and is currently available directly from Princeton and from high-end video resellers.
