Dynaudio Exhibits New Audience Speakers

Family Of 11 Upgraded, Enhanced Models Brings New Value And Performance To Home Theater And Two-Channel Audio

25-May-01

Dynaudio, a specialty audio manufacturer long associated with the highest level of speaker building, exhibited the newest edition of its Audience Series loudspeakers at Home Entertainment 2001 at the Hilton New York Hotel. For more than two decades, Dynaudio has met the demands of discerning customers by delivering spectacular speakers incorporating state-of-the-art technology. Now, Dynaudio has completely retooled its popular Audience series, enhancing the esthetics, broadening the range of applications and improving the loudspeakersí performance. Dynaudio has further extended the series with new models designed to meet customer needs and requirements as we move forward into the twenty-first century. The new Audience series - all of which is now shipping - comprises a complete range of loudspeaker models, beginning with the compact Audience 42 (previously Audience 40) and the Audience 52 (previously Audience 50) - both bookshelf models - to the Audience 62 (previously Audience 60), Audience 72 (previously Audience 70), and Audience 82 (previously Audience 80), all floorstanding towers. The new Audience 122C Center (previously Audience C120) and floor-standing Audience 122 (previously Audience LR120) loudspeakers are complemented by additional models designed for home theatre and lifestyle applications; in particular, the new, compact Audience 42C Center, and the new shallow-depth, front-ported Audience 42W wall-mount main/surround speakers (both of which are now also available in white). Recognizing that price is part of the hi-fi equation, especially for younger enthusiasts whose pockets may not be as deep as their aspirations, Dynaudio has worked to ensure that the new Audiences offer real value while providing a sensible upgrade path that will enable Dynaudio customers to stay with the brand for many years to come. A primary goal of the new Audience line was to retain current prices on the redesigned models, while creating lower price points for full Audience home theatre packages. To help achieve these goals, Dynaudio has also reduced the prices of its 10-inch powered Audience SUB 20A to $1,099 (from $1,199) and of its 12-inch powered Audience SUB 30A to $1,399 (from $1,599). Each speaker in the new Audience series has been developed to Dynaudio's exacting specifications, and features the state-of-the-art driver technology for which Dynaudio is renowned. The drivers incorporated into the Audience series and not standard, off-the-shelf drivers; rather, they are proprietary designs developed specifically for the models into which they are being utilized. Parameters are adjusted for not only the specific enclosure but also for optimum synergy between all drivers to be included in each design. The Audience seriesí woofers are built to Dynaudioís exacting standards. Despite a remarkable value-for-dollar ratio, Dynaudio has used only the highest quality components throughout, cutting no corners and leaving nothing to chance. Drivers feature large, 75mm diameter lightweight aluminum voice coils for maximum efficiency, greater control of the diaphragm, and maximum power handling and dynamics with minimum cone breakup. The one-piece MSP (magnesium silicate polymer) molded woofer diaphragm cones offer significant decreases in inter-modular and group delay distortions. The Audience lineís proprietary, design specific 28mm soft-dome tweeters utilize a special magnetic fluid to provide exceptional power handling and damping, offering clear, detailed sound reproduction across the entire frequency range. The 4mm die-cast aluminum front plates offer maximum stiffness while also acting like a heat sink, while vented pole pieces and damped rear chambers deliver excellent transient response. Systems are subject to no less than 86 quality control tests, and each speaker is covered by Dynaudioís five-year limited warranty. Dynaudio has paid particular attention to the look of the speakers, maintaining cabinet designs that incorporate rounded front baffle corners with a contemporary front grille. All floorstanding models are fitted with a provision to store the grilles on the back of the speaker cabinet should one choose to listen without the grilles in place. Consumers can choose among three stunning finishes, including the newly improved, higher quality Black Ash and Light Cherry, now virtually indistinguishable from natural veneer, as well as the previously available Rosewood finish. The three faux wood finishes are standard price on all Audience models (excluding subs), while a new White vinyl (with a white baffle and grille) is now an option (at a ten percent premium) on the Audience 42, 42W Wall, 42C Center, and 52. Floorstanding models feature taller, slim-line cabinets and are now all front-ported for ease of positioning, regardless of application, be it stereo or surround. All cabinets are bitumen-damped and feature extensive cross-bracing for maximum stability, thus eliminating any cabinet related coloration. Low frequency performance is guaranteed by a bass reflex port fitted with trumpet-shaped openings for enhanced airflow and reduced turbulence at high power. To adjust the bass output, the port tube can be fitted with the foam plug supplied with the speaker, an important consideration if one of the compact, rear-ported models is to be positioned on a bookshelf or against a back wall where the bass response will be boosted. An updated, redesigned crossover ensures that all models offer improved performance over their predecessors as well. Only the highest caliber components are used in the Audience series crossovers, which have been designed to afford the type of power handling normally expected from more expensive systems. Each component in the filter is glued and every inductor is cable-tied to the circuit board to ensure high performance results. For efficient production and the shortest possible current path, the filter is attached to an insulated speaker terminal supported with gold plated sockets for a solid, steady connection to speaker cables or plugs. The new Audience models bring true high-end Dynaudio quality and incredible value to an even broader audience base, with no compromise in performance in either music or home theatre applications. Audience 42 Bookshelf, 42W Wall Mount, And 42C Center Channel In 1998, Dynaudio introduced the Audience 40 for serious, budget-conscious audio enthusiasts who demand quality and value. The Audience 40 achieved legendary status throughout the world, receiving numerous accolades and awards, including the prestigious EISA European Speaker Of The Year award in 1999. Though the Audience 40 left little room for improvement, the new Audience 42 meets the challenge with a new MDF baffle to reduce resonance, stronger cabinet construction, and an updated crossover offering improved sound quality, as well as the new White finish option (in addition to the standard finishes). The Audience 42 is available at the same price, $699 per pair, as the Model 40. An optional mounting bracket accessory is also available. Housed in an attractive compact cabinet, the Audience 42 suits virtually all listening environments. It features the same 15cm ESOTEC woofer and 28mm soft-dome tweeter from the Audience 40, incorporating the aforementioned improvements while holding the line on price. Dynaudio also offers two new Audience 42 variants - the Audience 42W Wall and the Audience 42C Center - in response to consumer demand for high performance audio products also suitable for home theatre at affordable prices. Utilizing the same Audience 40-based driver complement as the Audience 42, the Audience 42W Wall is a two-way, shallow depth, front-ported design for home theatre main, side, or rear surround channel applications, as well as stereo applications where space is as much of a concern as is performance. It mounts to the wall with a supplied bracket requiring only one screw, and is available in the same finish options (including White) as the Audience 42, making it an ideal choice as a surround speaker for any Audience-based home theatre system. The same drivers power the compact front-ported, two-way Audience 42C Center. Delivering a level of performance and detail previously unimaginable at $399, the front-ported, magnetically-shielded 42C is the perfect starting point for anyone looking for audiophile grade performance in a value-based multichannel home theatre system. Using either the Audience 42 or 42W Wall, one can put together a full Dynaudio home theatre system thatís big on sound quality, performance, and value, but small in dimensions and price. Adding either the 10-inch SUB20A or 12-inch SUB30A to handle the low-end will help the system exceed all expectations. Audience 52 The Audience 52, based on the same driver complement as the renowned Model 50, delivers dramatically improved performance through a redesigned crossover. The 52 is housed in an attractive vinyl cabinet internally lined with bitumen damping material for improved performance, and is available in the three standard vinyl finishes, as well as the optional White, allowing easy integration into any listening environment. The Model 52 can be fitted with an optional wall mounting bracket accessory as the 42, and boasts esthetically-pleasing rounded corners and a shorter protection grille. The woofer has been moved closer to the tweeter, and an MDF baffle reduces resonance around the drivers. The Audience 52 features a 75mm aluminum voice coil and one-piece molded diaphragm in a 17cm woofer that works with a 28mm soft-dome tweeter, providing clear, detailed and dynamic sound reproduction across the entire frequency range. A redesigned crossover and an adjusted tuning improve the high frequency performance as compared to the previous model it replaces. Audience 122C Center Channel Speaker Hi-fi enthusiasts who want really accurate reproduction in a surround sound format need a center channel speaker specifically designed for horizontal positioning above or below a TV set. In response, Dynaudio has introduced the Audience 122C, an update of the successful Audience C120 Center. The 122C improves upon the C120 without any increase in price. It is magnetically shielded, so it can be correctly placed in the center position near a TV set. The 122C can also be placed on the Audience SUB-30A subwoofer, although use of a subwoofer remains optional depending on the size of the room and the customer's audio requirements. Equipped with an MDF baffle and internal bracing to combine maximum support for the drivers with minimum resonance, the Audience 122C is housed in an attractive, round-cornered vinyl cabinet lined at the top and bottom with bitumen sheets to improve damping. The cabinet is finished in the same standard Audience finishes as the rest of the line, allowing perfect cosmetic integration. A newly-developed tweeter and the updated crossover network further improve performance. The 28mm soft-dome tweeter is a special shielded version of Dynaudio's renowned D260 ESOTEC tweeter and features a 4mm die-cast aluminum front for maximum stiffness and a vented pole piece and rear chamber for excellent transient response. Working with the tweeter are two special 15cm ESOTEC woofers with 75mm aluminum voice coils and one-piece molded diaphragms. The 122C is precisely voice matched to the new Audience 122 floor-stander, which shares the exact same driver complement. The filter is high frequency impedance-corrected for easier amplifier loading, with the speaker impedance level set at a minimal 6 ohms. The crossover enables smooth, clean, natural sound reproduction in the transition zone, and ensures that the speaker behaves perfectly across the entire frequency range, with continuous power handling of 200W. Careful attention has been paid to the horizontal and vertical off-axis response so that the speaker delivers the best possible sound reproduction to several listeners sharing the same listening environment. Dynaudio has worked especially hard to ensure that phase considerations in the crossover enhance placement options in the listening environment. To adjust the bass output, the port can be fitted with the supplied foam plug if the speaker is placed in a cabinet, on a bookshelf or against a back wall where the wall will boost low frequencies. The foam plug is also useful if the 122C is electrically filtered in combination with a subwoofer or if it is working in a surround sound system using products where an inappropriate mixture of frequency responses needs to be corrected to avoid side effects in the listening room. If the 122C is being used without a subwoofer, the foam plug can be removed to create space behind the speaker to produce a deeper, cleaner sound. The Audience 122C incorporates all the latest improvements derived from recent research into surround sound. By combining these improvements with a price that represents true value, Dynaudio has created a center channel speaker that delivers spectacular surround sound audio quality. Audience 122 Floorstanding Loudspeaker The Audience 122 is a front-ported, floorstanding, updated version of the Audience LR120 compact monitor it replaces. Incorporating the same driver complement as the Audience 122C Center, its technical twin, it perfectly suits any multichannel surround sound system comprised of other Audience models. The slim, powerful Model 122 is magnetically-shielded for easy placement near any video screen, and front-ported, allowing it to be positioned close to a rear wall. It can be used in two-channel stereo applications without any compromise in audio performance, just as one would expect from Dynaudio. As in the other Audience models, an MDF baffle and internal bracing combine maximum support for the drivers with minimum resonance. Part of the cabinet essentially serves as an integrated stand, while ensuring that the drivers are positioned at optimum height. The 122 also incorporates a redesigned crossover for increased sound quality, and is available in the standard Audience finish options as the rest of the line. The drivers are exactly those utilized in the 122C Center, with the same reduced magnetic stray field properties which allow the 122 to also be placed near a TV or any electrical appliance sensitive to magnetic fields. As in the 122C, the crossover filter is high frequency impedance-corrected for easier amplifier loading, with the speaker impedance level set at a minimal 6 ohms. Phase considerations in the crossover broaden placement options in the listening environment and, when the Model 122 is used with the voiced-matched 122C Center, the total energy/power response of the Audience surround system is utilized and combined in a manner that provides a widened sweet spot and improved off-axis performance, regardless of where listeners are sitting in the room. By combining these improvements with a price tag that represents true value, Dynaudio has created a home theatre package that delivers spectacular audio quality and performance as both a surround sound and two-channel stereo monitor. Audience 62 Floorstanding Loudspeaker Finding the right speaker for a small listening environment lacking bookshelves can be a problem. To provide an answer, Dynaudio has introduced the floorstanding Audience 62 for small to mid-sized rooms. The Audience 62, which replaces the Audience 60 at no increase in price, is equipped with a heavy-duty MDF baffle that combines maximum support for the drivers with minimum resonance. Incorporating the same sized driver complement as the Model 60, the Audience 62 features a 17cm woofer with 75mm voice coil and one-piece molded diaphragm cone, and 28mm soft-dome tweeter with a 4mm die-cast aluminum front for maximum stiffness. A new design for the tweeter offers increased performance. The Audience 62 delivers clean, smooth sound reproduction in the transition zone, as well as phenomenal audio quality across the entire frequency range. For improved adaptation to the amplifier, Dynaudio paid particular attention to the Audience 62's impedance curve so that it responds exceptionally well. The speaker has also been high frequency impedance corrected above 200 kHz for maximum linear performance. To position the drivers for optimum performance, Dynaudio uses a much taller cabinet than the previous Model 60, while still utilizing a front-ported bass reflex design for maximum positioning flexibility. Deeper bass extension is made possible by the new speakerís bass-reflex system tuning. The Audience 62 combines hand-built quality, the latest technology, and spectacular sound reproduction across the entire frequency range with an inexpensive price that offers hi-fi aficionados true value without any comprise to their audio enjoyment. Audience 72 Floorstanding Loudspeaker The Audience 72 is a floorstanding speaker comprised of the same driver complement as the Audience 70, which it replaces, in a taller, slim, front-ported bass-reflex cabinet. Sonic performance is improved with a newly-designed crossover. A heavy duty MDF baffle combines maximum support for the drivers with minimum resonance, and all is housed in an attractive, round-cornered vinyl cabinet fitted with internal bracing and lined with bitumen sheets to improve damping. The 28mm soft-dome tweeter is an improved, customized version that incorporates many of the features of Dynaudio's renowned D260 ESOTEC tweeter. With a 4mm die-cast aluminum front for maximum stiffness and vented pole piece and rear chamber for excellent transient response, the tweeter also utilizes magnetic fluid for exceptional power handling and damping. Working alongside the tweeter are two 17cm woofers with 75mm voice coils and one-piece molded cone diaphragms, enabling the Audience 72 to offer higher sensitivity levels than smaller Audience models and still deliver maximum power levels of 210W. As in the 62, the Audience 72 has a very linear impedance curve from the midrange and above. The speaker has also been high frequency impedance-corrected above 200 kHz to ensure well behaved, linear performance. Now in a two-and-a-half way design, the Audience 72ís woofers do not work in parallel as in the 70. One is cut off at a higher frequency than the other, reducing distortion through the midrange while improving imaging and soundstaging. The Audience 72 incorporates so many improvements it is destined to become an even bigger success than its predecessor in delivering spectacular audio quality while affording unrivaled value for the money. Audience 82 Floorstanding Loudspeaker Dynaudio has introduced a new model at the top end of the Audience range - the large, floorstanding, three-way Audience 82. Intended for mid-size to large rooms, this powerful giant is designed to provide high sensitivity and high power handling for extremely loud and dynamic audio reproduction. A heavy-duty MDF baffle combines maximum support for the drivers with minimum resonance. The Model 82 is housed in an attractive, round-cornered vinyl cabinet available in the three standard Audience finishes. The cabinet is also equipped with a separate midrange chamber, and its side walls are lined with bitumen sheets to improve damping. The 28mm soft-dome tweeter is a highly efficient, double-magnet custom version of Dynaudio's exceptional D28 tweeter. For the midrange, a proprietary 15cm ESOTEC driver with a one-piece molded diaphragm and a large aluminum wire voice coil provide increased dynamic capability. The Audience 82 also utilizes two newly developed 20cm woofers with powerful magnet systems, 75mm aluminum wire voice coils and one-piece molded diaphragms, enabling it to deliver long-term power up to 250W while maintaining the highest levels of sensitivity. With the stunning Audience 82, Dynaudio has created a system that offers phenomenal power and exceptional grace, delivering spectacular sound reproduction with maximum sensitivity. And like all the speakers in the redesigned Audience series, this gentle giant offers incredible value for the money without any compromise on audio quality.
