12-CD Grateful Dead Box Coming This Fall

22-Jun-01

The Grateful Dead may be dead, but the archival releases keep on coming -- with a monster 12-disc set drawn from their Warner Bros. years out this fall. ""The Golden Road: 1965-1973"" is due Oct. 16 from Rhino Records and will feature digitally remastered versions of all the albums the band released during that period, plus rare and unreleased material. Billboard reports that the only album that won't be expanded with added material will be 1969's ""Live Dead,"" which was considered by Dead publicist Dennis McNally as perfect the way it was. McNally told Billboard he has also put together two compilations for the box: one set of live material and another featuring studio cuts, both dubbed ""The Birth Of The Dead."" Meanwhile, the band's own Grateful Dead Records will release volume 22 of the archival ""Dick's Picks"" sets. This one will document Feb. 23 and 24, 1968 performances at the Kings Beach bowling alley near Lake Tahoe, where the band recorded part of their ""Anthem Of The Sun"" LP, Billboard said. In addition, a second volume of the group's ""View From The Vault"" DVD series is being readied. This one captures a June 14, 1991 performance at Washington, D.C.'s RFK Stadium, with keyboardists Bruce Hornsby and Vince Welnick joining the group on stage. The performance is taken from the in-house video production used to project the band onto large screens at the show. The DVD and CD versions of the show will include the complete performance, but the VHS tape will be cut. The CD and DVD will also include four songs recorded at the same venue with the late Brent Mydland on keyboards, Billboard said.
