For 2001, Toshiba has revamped and expanded its acclaimed line of exclusively distributed Cinema SeriesÆ color TVs, placing the emphasis squarely on HD-compatibility and widescreen (16:9) viewing. Out of a total of 13 high performance Cinema Series sets, the line now boasts seven HDTV-compatible models, which includes three state-of-the-art widescreen projection sets. In addition, the line has also been expanded with the addition of four new FSTÆ Pureô flat-screen SuperTUBE models. With newly designed cabinets, plus a host of improved image-enhancing and convenience features including PowerFocus HD and new PowerFocus HCF optics, ""TouchFocus"" auto convergence for faster, more accurate digital convergence of projection sets, ""Cinema Mode"" (3:2 pull-down) for more realistic and detailed reconstruction of film-based video content, a special Ambient Light Sensor for optimum home theatre enjoyment in all room lighting conditions, and a new Dynamic Contrast feature for near film-like image quality, Toshiba Cinema Series color TVs are the ultimate quality statement in advanced home theatre display devices. ""Our goal for Cinema Series has not changed,"" said Scott Ramirez, Toshiba's Vice President of Marketing. ""Cinema Series is designed to be the best, and the new picture quality enhancements we have made this year create picture quality that is beyond comparison."" Cinema Series Leads The Widescreen Revolution Toshiba's Cinema Series line for 2001 reflects the company's increased commitment to widescreen 16:9 viewing. The line's three widescreen HD-compatible projection models, including the 50-inch 50HX81, the 57-inch 57HX81 and the 65-inch 65HX81 offer consumers the ultimate cinema-like viewing experience, reproducing film-based video content such as DVD movies with all the full-screen impact intended by the director. Cinema Series HD: Total Compatibility With The Future Toshiba's Cinema Series HD line offers consumers a choice of five HDTV-compatible projection models, ranging from the 43-inch 43HX71 to the 65-inch 65HX81, as well as two HDTV-compatible FST Pure SuperTUBE sets, the 36-inch 36HFX71 and the 32-inch 32HFX71. All Cinema Series HDTV-compatible TVs include two sets of ColorStreamÆ HD high definition component video inputs for the best picture quality from a choice of digital display devices. New IDSC Pro Technology For optimum image quality in all Cinema Series rear-projection HD sets, Toshiba has improved on its advanced IDSC II (Intelligent Digital Scan Conversion) technology, which utilizes Advanced Digital Video Noise Reduction to automatically analyze the on-screen image and apply the precise amount of noise reduction necessary to maintain absolute image clarity and crispness at all times. Toshiba has upgraded the IDSC II technology in Cinema Series HDTV-compatible projection TVs to the new IDSC Pro system, which automatically converts 480i and 480p images to 540p, and automatically passes through 1080i images. IDSC Pro technology also provides improved focus and convergence due to its consistent scan rate of 33.75 Hz. Like IDSC II, the IDSC Pro system employs vertical line doubling and frame doubling, and horizontal pixel doubling technologies to achieve optimum picture quality with an absence of image-degrading motion artifacts. These processes have also been significantly improved with the addition of a new technological advancement - Hyper Progressive Scanning, which doubles the size of the memory buffer (sampling 13,600 points), eliminating all motion artifacts and jagged lines caused by on-screen motion. The result is a more accurate progressive scan image, with higher pixel density, better focus, and better convergence. Improved PowerFocus HD Optic System All Cinema Series HD projection TVs feature either the company's six-element PowerFocusô HD or new five-element PowerFocus HCF Optic System for consistently sharper and clearer image quality. These new lens systems feature an advanced design that is precision-tuned to the set's ""Color Wavelength"" design, to custom match and enhance color reproduction. In addition, all Cinema Series projection TVs feature new improved PowerFocus HD Plus CRTs that provide a 20 percent increase in sharpness over conventional CRTs. The new CRTs utilize two unique Toshiba technologies, Impregnated Cathode technology for a sharper image and longer CRT life, plus a special Spherical Phosphor layer which creates better image uniformity and resists burn-in. TouchFocus For Faster, More Accurate Digital Convergence All Toshiba HD-Compatible Cinema Series projection TVs benefit from a significant image-enhancing technology called TouchFocus. This automatic digital convergence system makes it faster and easier to accurately adjust all three CRTs for the sharpest, clearest image possible in any home theatre situation. TouchFocus utilizes four optical sensors (located behind the projection TV screen), and advanced chip technology to create perfect convergence at the touch of a button. Unlike conventional manual convergence systems, TouchFocus automatically adjusts for variances in natural, and man-made magnetic fields from sources such as speakers, offering total flexibility in a wide variety of home theatre configurations. It provides perfect convergence at the touch of a button. Cinema Mode (3:2 Pull-Down) For The Ultimate In High Definition Image Quality For the ultimate in high definition image quality, all Toshiba Cinema Series HDTV-compatible TVs feature a unique new image-enhancing technology called Cinema Mode (3:2 pull-down). Using the on-screen display, consumers may select a special ""Cinema Mode"" which allows the TV to display a more realistic and detailed reconstruction of film-based (24 fps) video content such as DVD movies, eliminating the image-degrading artifacts caused by improper processing of film-based content. When viewing original video source material, this feature can be turned off to avoid unnecessary processing. Ambient Light Sensor Provides Ideal Viewing In All Lighting Conditions To maintain optimum home theatre viewing in all room lighting conditions, all Toshiba Cinema Series widescreen TVs include a specially designed photoelectric Ambient Light Sensor built into the front panel of the TV set. Using a total of 60 different contrast gradations, this provides an automatic adjustment of the contrast level, based on ambient room lighting conditions, ensuring that the picture will never be too dark in the daytime or too bright at night. This feature may be turned off using the on-screen display, if desired. To improve image quality even further, all new Toshiba Cinema Series projection TVs include a new Dynamic Contrast feature. Dynamic Contrast significantly improves the set's contrast ratio, and enhances color reproduction and saturation for near film-like quality. Toshiba's TheaterBrightô HD high contrast projection screens, included in all Cinema Series HDTV-compatible projection TV models, increase corner brightness, resulting in more uniform brightness across the screen. Cinema Series HD projection sets also feature built-in TheaterShieldô AR (anti-reflective) protection screens, which include a new unique anti-reflective layer for increased contrast and reduced glare by over 50 percent, with no reduction in brightness. WOW! New Cinema Series Sound For 2001 Toshiba has made two significant audio improvements to its Cinema Series TV lineup for 2001. First, virtually all Cinema Series projections sets now feature separate woofers and tweeters for more a dynamic audio soundfield that more closely reproduces the cinema experience. Secondly, Toshiba has added SRS WOW, the latest audio enhancement from SRSÆ Labs to all its Cinema Series HD-compatible direct-view and projection models. The WOW system utilizes three companion technologies: SRS 3D, which creates a three-dimensional soundfield from two speakers, TruBass, which utilizes psychoacoustic processing to produce rich and powerful low frequency audio from small speakers, and FOCUS, which raises the sound image vertically, creating a more vivid and clear soundfield. All three of these audio enhancement technologies work together to create a true home theatre sound experience from the set's built-in speaker system. In addition to Toshiba's new HDTV-compatible Cinema Series HD projection TVs, the line also includes the new 53-inch 53AX61 analog projection TV. Stylish New Cinema Series Cabinets Toshiba has redesigned the cosmetics of its Cinema Series color TV lineup for 2001, offering consumers a stylish and elegant centerpiece for any home theatre system. Cinema Series projection TVs, for example, feature a slimmer design with striking two-toned cabinets with dark speaker grilles and inset front panels set off by a lighter silver bezel. And like all Toshiba projection TVs, Cinema Series projection sets position the screen at the proper viewing height, eliminating the need for a separate TV stand. New Convenience Features Toshiba's Cinema Series sets offer users an unprecedented level of convenience. For example, virtually all new Cinema Series TVs feature a special Speed Surf function. When viewers hold down either the Channel Up or Down button on the remote, a Speed Surf box appears onscreen, allowing them to speed through all available channels. In addition, a two-level mute function on most Cinema Series sets allows viewers to reduce volume by 50 percent with the first press of the mute button, then press it a second time for full mute. For added convenience, all Cinema Series TVs include Toshiba's new illuminated universal remote control, which allows users to easily control a wide variety of additional home theatre components.
